When local Dave Olejnik launched Laynes Espresso in 2011, it became Leeds’ first artisan coffee shop. Today it’s still the city’s best. The fact that Laynes is conveniently located around the corner from Leeds Train Station means this minimalist cafe is always buzzing, but locals come from all over town to pull up a pew at the large street-facing windows with a strong flat white and a plate of runny organic eggs on buttery sourdough.

An artisan roasted blend, expertly made from independent roasters, will most likely put Laynes Espresso on any coffee lover’s list. Owner Dave Olejnik learnt his trade with Leeds coffee pioneer Opposite, and Laynes has become a caffeine lover’s haven since its opening in 2011. Its location close to Leeds railway station makes it popular with commuters, city workers and shoppers.

At first glance, Laynes looks unremarkable: just another blandly modern coffee shop. Read down its peg-board menu, however (drip-filter, Square Mile beans, 12-hour cold-brewed tea) and you are left in no doubt about the seriousness of this endeavour. The vegan breakfast brioche actually features yummy vegan bacon, but trust us – the wild mushrooms on brioche are truly heavenly.
