A little out of the city centre, towards the lovely green space of Sefton Park, Belzan has an appealing neighbourhood feel. Its interior is very much of the modern bistro style, with wooden tables, herringbone chairs and a general stripped-back feel. The menu allows for sharing or classic à la carte ordering, with robust flavours aplenty in dishes such as the signature ‘Guinness Rarebit Potato’.

In fact, a day that involves lunch at Pilgrim on Duke Street, dinner at Belzan on Smithdown Road, with a scoot around Harvey Nichols in Liverpool One Shopping Centre in between is very possibly my favourite leisure day ever. But I never nag foodie people to hurry up and visit the city, because it has a mysterious, uncharted quality that makes outsiders narrow their eyes, say, “It’s nice there?

A little out of town in one of Liverpool’s student-dominated suburbs, Belzan is worth the taxi ride for its beautifully presented sharing plates and impressive natural wine selection. High on style but low on pomp, this neighbourhood eatery ticks the various au courant dining boxes: all polished concrete and white brick, with seasonal dishes on tasteful, crafty ceramics. Though Belzan’s website would have you believe it deals in “humble” cuisine, the food here is as satisfyingly current as it’s possible in Liverpool – with lots of locally sourced produce, subtle Asian references and an eye on sustainability.

Another Smithdown Road success story, Belzan has won acclaim from food critics including The Guardian’s Grace Dent for their innovative food served at the heart of Liverpool’s student district. Head inside their industrial-style bistro, with it’s white-washed walls and … for build your own breakfasts with two eggs cooked how you want plus additional bacon, house beans, hash browns and much more, or pick one of their brunching favourites such as Shakshuka, salmon and eggs or smash avo toast. From the team behind Belzan and Burnt Milk Hotel, Madre is a colourful taco restaurant which, in summer, extends out into a popular courtyard beer garden, with regular DJ-led sessions and margaritas flowing until late. Whilst a party venue, dishes such as roasted bone marrow with salsa macha, onions and coriander or quesadillas made with Madre’s own green chorizo (a Mexican take on the Spanish sausage, flavoured with green chillies and coriander), are testament to the seriousness of its cooking. Stroll along Smithdown Road and this unsuspecting modern bistro might not even catch your eye if you’re in a rush or scrolling TikTok as you go. However, we recommend adding a reservation here to your to-do list to get a taste of what MICHELIN judges describe as “well-judged, interesting combinations, with flavours that are as generous as they are flavoursome”. You won’t be leaving Belzan hungry, that’s for sure but you will be left wanting more.

Heading out of central Liverpool, Smithdown Road is home to Caribbean café, Raggas, Italians Fritto and Little Furnace, and hip, easy-going Belzan, a small plates restaurant with a big rep.
