Since 2014, West Enders have been meowing over Kitty Fisher’s—a cozy and intimate rendezvous named after a famed 18th-century courtesan. Within this townhouse, patrons dine on seasonal wood-fired delicacies like the Brixham Hake paired with lobster bisque and fennel or the big-enough-to-share Belted Galloway Chateaubriand, whilst sipping on signature gin-based Bad Kitty cocktails or old-world vintage wines without worry of time or what happened earlier in the day. The Chocolate Ganache helps that further.

Why: Found in Shepherd Market, Kitty Fisher’s is a cosy restaurant which spreads itself across two floors, although it’s worth noting that tables are tightly packed together. The interiors hark back to the 18 th century (think dark wood and pillar box red studded banquettes), but Kitty Fisher’s menu is far more forward-looking. Kitty Fisher’s is cheekily named after an 18th century lady of the night who used to live nearby, and there are cheeky hints of Spain to be found among the classic British fare on offer as well – the salsa verde accompanying the pork chop is one of them. When Kitty Fisher’s opened in 2014, originally with Tomos Parry in the kitchen (he has since launched the fantastic Brat in Shoreditch), it was a sure-fire hit, and one of the hardest tables in the city to book. So we snuck back in to see how they were getting on with chef Karl Goward. The restaurant’s namesake is an 18th-century courtesan known for her self-indulgence, once rumoured to have eaten a 1,000-guinea banknote on a slice of bread and butter.

Kitty Fisher was an eighteenth century English courtesan who was famous, among other things, for being the lover of the Italian adventurer Giacomo Casanova. It is this love affair of England with continental Europe that Kitty Fisher’s celebrates. Named after the eponymous Ms. Fisher, who lived not far from where the modern Kitty Fisher’s stands in Mayfair, the restaurant offers modern British food with a Spanish and Italian twist.

With plush pink booths and a small number of tables, it's all candles and dim lighting, nestled in Shepherd Market, the hidden gem of Mayfair. Obviously, you go to Kitty Fisher's for the meat – it's the done thing. The Highland wing ribs are the stuff of legend, and the crispy roast potatoes are staunchly crunchy and exceptionally fluffy.

Kitty Fisher's, located in a 17th-century former basement bakery, is probably one of the most romantic London restaurants going. It's a low-key but elegant, candle-lit venue, and chef George Barson's cooking over a wood fire guarantees you'll impress your date. Heck, even we'd be impressed.
