Reviews Summary

This & That is a long-standing Manchester institution celebrated for its incredibly affordable and authentic Indian curries, particularly the 'rice 'n' three' option. While many praise the value, fresh flavors, and friendly staff, some recent reviews suggest a decline in taste and a concern about food safety practices. Despite this, it remains a popular choice for a quick, budget-friendly meal in the Northern Quarter. Reddit+1

"We saw this restaurant on a YouTube “must visit in Manchester” and made a special trip. No frills, extremely friendly staff (guessing most are family). Genuinely interested in customers. Food was very tasty and will come again if we visit. They run out of some items towards closing time so I would get there an hour before closing. It’s off the main road down a lane so it’s a little hidden. :)"

Tom Bromhead

"This and That is an Indian cafe offering a variety of combo meals and snacks. The best part about this cafe is that it’s both budget-friendly and delicious. The ambience and service were decent, though nothing exceptional. I tried their rice, curry, and a snack, and was satisfied with the meal."

AKHIL_VARGHESE_ITTY

"Had dinner here in Manchester and went with the daily menu. The food itself was alright, nothing special, but considering the price it was actually good value. I paid just £7 for a dinner, which is hard to beat."

Top 10 budget restaurants, bars and cafes in Manchester | Manchester holidays

Tucked down a side street in the Northern Quarter, This & That is one of the area's original curry cafes, where you can pick-up a filling "rice 'n' three" (choices of curry) for a few quid. It's a no-frills joint, but the food is fresh, homemade and uses whole spices to give the dishes the kind of wallop of flavour that you wouldn't normally expect at a sub-£5 price. The various lamb curries usually deliver a good savoury gravy and a reasonable amount of tasty meat, but, for me, its the veggie curries – particularly the chana masala, the daals and the spinach curry – that really sing with flavour.

Ten of Manchester's oldest restaurants

This hard to find restaurant, down a dingy Northern Quarter back alley, has been serving delicious home cooked Indian curries for over thirty years. The original owners sold up around fifteen years ago and relocated to Bolton under the name Rice ‘n’ Three, which was named after the signature concept of eating a pile of rice along with three curries chosen from a canteen style offering of that day’s choice. Other major UK cities have similar pockets of low price Asian daytime diners, but it seems that the famous rice 'n' three institution is uniquely Mancunian.

Fast-forward 200 years and it is, of course, no surprise that Greater Manchester is teeming with vegetarian restaurants, from unassuming back-alley curry houses such as This & That to glossy, Scandi-chic tasting menus at the appropriately named 1847. But with 2019 hailed as ‘The Year of the Vegan’, Manchester has been modestly building on its noble pedigree, creating a vast vegan scene peppered with a gaggle of truly top-tier spots helmed by Mancs who possess an infuriatingly natural ability to combine creativity and cool with very little pomp and ceremony.
