Once a tired old village inn, the Huntsman has been renovated with panache by owner Marston’s and renowned pub designer the Concorde Group, bringing a shiny industrial style to the place — all metal fixtures, reclaimed parquet floors and plush velour booths (although, happily, the old skittle alley has been left in place). The same style runs into the bedrooms: window-shaped mirrors, trendy bare-bulb light fittings and bold patterned fabrics give it the feel of a chic city hotel. For maximum privacy, ask for a room in the converted stable block, which have more space than those in the main building, and minimise potential disruption from the restaurant.

Curiously we walk in and at first it seems quiet until making our way around and into the expanse of the main restaurant. Certainly, a distinctive look, The Huntsman looks more like the New Forest’s alternative to Soho House but without quite the audience to match. A £1 million makeover funnelling into this new look, the re-design features hexagonal tiling, copper piping with an amalgamation of muted tones with vivid and contemporary furnishings.

Rejuvenating a dated public house, The Huntsman of Brockenshurst is now one of the region’s most stylish places to stay – especially if you book one of the guestrooms in the converted stables. In the summer, there are fire pits and pergolas weatherproofing drinks in the spacious garden. You'd be forgiven for thinking you'd just checked into a boutique hotel in London with the stylish interiors at this chic New Forest hotel. As two vegetarians, we love the veggie option that The Huntsman offers. A mushroom and camembert wellington with spiced red cabbage and all the trimmings. Nestled amid the picturesque landscapes of Brockenhurst, conveniently near the train station is The Huntsman.

I’ve been twice now, once for a weekend dinner with the ladies, and once for Sunday lunch with my boyfriend. Both, wonderful experiences. It’s a lovely setting, in the aforementioned Brockenhurst, full of lovely furniture, beautiful pictures, and a cool vibe.

The Huntsman, located in central Brockenhurst, where the menu groans with pub classics like Cumberland sausage and mash, steak and smoked mackerel pate on toast. Don’t forget to check out their range of real ales, craft beers and artisanal gins as you wait.

Commoners' ponies, cattle, pigs, sheep and donkeys are a popular part of the New Forest scene, but during 2019 agisters attended 159 road traffic accidents involving these animals, a small but disappointing increase on the 154 accidents attended in 2018.

With just 13 boutique-style guest rooms, you’d better book up quick if you want to stay at The Huntsman at a weekend or in summer. It’s a lovely pub with a large beer garden, and a great menu offering plenty of choice. Even for picky diners.
