Reviews Summary

Prawn on the Lawn is lauded for its exceptionally fresh and creative seafood small plates, with many diners highlighting the tuna and mackerel as standouts. The casual, neighborhood vibe and attentive staff contribute to a positive dining experience. However, some find the prices to be on the higher side, particularly for drinks, and a few reviewers have found certain main courses underwhelming.

"Well worth a visit!! We selected 5/6 dishes. The highlight was the Mackerel, closely followed by the Tuna. Although to be fair we didn’t have a bad dish out of all the ones we tried. Will definitely be back and also going to visit the one in Islington. Nice hand-wash in the toilet too."

Alistair McVittie

"One of the best seafood dinners I’ve had! And that’s after years in Southeast Alaska. The small plates were perfect for sharing amongst us three: The sole, mackerel, and monkfish were PERFECT. The chefs really understood the textural and flavor balances of the Asian, Italian and local ingredients. The staff were great: attentive and gracious. Well done!"

jeremy neldon

"Came here for a late lunch as a change from Stein and there were a lot of people here mid afternoon.
It’s more of a tapas like place. There was a decent choice of quite expensive dishes. We chose one of the cheapest white wines which was still £37 a bottle then 3 dishes plus some broccoli.
It took quite a bit of time for any food to appear and then came out at various times, some much longer than others.
The quality and taste of the food was excellent, but there wasn’t much of it.
The service was good and it had a nice ambience and feel to the place.
Overall good but also expensive at >£90 for two for 4 small dishes and wine."

Prawn on the Lawn – Padstow

If you like seafood then you’ll love this cosy little seafood bar, where tasty, tapas-style small plates are the order of the day. It may be compact but the charming team make it great fun and create a laid-back vibe. Choose from the range of fresh, tasty, well-prepared dishes chalked on the blackboards; they even offer whole fish sharing plates, but be aware this can push the bill up.

Where to eat and drink in Cornwall

There's no such thing as an ugly butterfly, in the same way as there is no such thing as food waste." So says Scottish-born Adam Handling, who has delighted the culinary world with his commitment to making exquisite dishes with zero food waste. True to his cause, Ugly Butterfly combines ingredients sourced from growers, farmers and fishermen across Cornwall into ingenious plates, served in a glass-walled dining room strung with dried flowers. Located above the golden sands of Carbis Bay beach, Ugly Butterfly is a unique fine dining spot where using as much of every animal and vegetable is as important to the chefs as serving up all-bells-and-whistles dishes is. Start with local oysters and finish with a Food fight (chef Adam Handlings winning dessert on BBCs Great British Menu), with courses such as hogget with Jersey Royals, and Cornish brill with mussels in between. There will almost certainly be some playful elements too (hello dry ice!) so be sure to bring your camera.

Round up a few friends who love fresh fish and seafood as much as you do and head to this popular Padstow restaurant for an epic sociable feast. The line-up of small plates, whole fish, shellfish platters and delicious sides changes daily depending on what the local fishermen have caught, but the best plan of action is to order as many dishes as you can cram on your table and tuck in – sharing stye. From April to October, Prawn on the Lawn ups sticks to Trerethern Farm just outside of Padstow (and becomes Prawn on the Farm) where it camps out for the warmer months for alfresco (and tent covered) dining.

Dog-friendly restaurants in Cornwall

Rick Stein’s restaurants often get all the plaudits in Padstow, but Prawn on the Lawn is quietly doing something exceptional without all the famous chef fanfare: fresh, expertly prepared fish caught from the British Isles, served up in a small but welcoming restaurant in the centre of town. Your larger breeds might not be super comfortable here, as tables and chairs are in fairly close quarters, but if you have a smaller dog you can indulge on gurnard ceviche, lip-smacking oysters or Cornish mussels and crab until your heart’s content. Cornwall’s best seafood restaurants 2025

What started as a fish restaurant in north London has now bloomed with another site in Cornwall, too. Headed up by Katie and Rick Toogood, the restaurant in town has the same signature fresh fish counter you can buy from as the one in the capital does, but what sets this one apart is its penchant for pop ups. For the past few years, as soon as the mercury rises, the team pick up sticks and move out of Padstow’s main town and swap it for a nearby greener space to create Prawn on the Farm.
