A handy choice for authentic Japanese food in Norwich, this modern, cool, uncluttered place is tucked away in cobbled Tombland and you can enjoy a spot of people watching under the trees if the weather allows. An excellent selection of freshly prepared sushi from the counter is one of the high points, and the choice of fish extends to yellowfin tuna, salmon, prawns eel and the like. The kitchen also deals in chicken yakitori, gyoza dumplings and other classic appetisers, along with tempura, salmon teriyaki, curious (but authentic) Japanese curries and breadcrumbed tonkatsu dishes.

Loved by the city’s Japanese community and beyond, it’s a laid-back izakaya-style restaurant that delivers deliciously: unagi (eel) and prized otoro (fatty) tuna nigiri were highlights of a recent visit. Alternatively, try a bento box, or get a yakitori fix if you prefer. For something robustly meaty, the feisty open-fire cooking at Brix & Bones tempts with mutton chops, wagyu beef fat potatoes, and merguez sausages.

I am gluten intolerant and the waitress went through the whole menu and explained what was gluten free and what could be made gluten free (pretty much everything), and brought gluten free soy sauce. We had the sushi lover's two tier dish with some adjustments to make it gluten free and it was really good, as well as onigiri and mochi.

This is essentially a Japanese social tavern with smaller dishes to snack on and share with friends alongside sake or beer. The ethos at Shiki is to bring friends and families together through food in a warm and comfortable environment.

Go for a lunch time bento box (£12) with some Saki or Green tea. Closed Sunday & Monday, open for lunch and dinner. For other Japanese recommended restaurants (untried by me as yet) try Ciscoe’son 25 Ber Street, for Pan Asiana & Sushi, open every day for lunch and dinner.

Incredible sushi and sashimi - made even better by the lovely staff!. We were a table of six, with two pescatarians and a gluten-free diner - they accommodated us with no trouble at all!. There was so much food to choose from, highly recommend the Shiki Sushi Bento box!!

So when Tim booked a table for my birthday at Shiki last year, I wasn't really sure what to expect. Well, I was amazed to say the least. Not only did they have a fair selection to pick from, but they were all absolutely delicious.

Shiki is the oldest family-owned Japanese restaurant in Norwich, serving up fresh sushi, sashimi, warming bowls of udon and more, alongside traditional drinks like sake and shochu, all at a reasonable price.

You’re sure to love this Norwich restaurant with gluten-free options, all the dishes they offer are fresh and some of them are vegetarian as well as gluten-free.
