What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners rave about the incredibly fresh and high-quality seafood at the Oban Seafood Hut, often highlighting the generous portions and excellent value for money. The simple, no-frills approach allows the natural flavors of the ocean to shine. While the casual, alfresco setting is part of its charm, limited seating and the occasional seagull raid can be minor drawbacks. Many consider it a must-visit culinary gem.
"We made a special detour to Oban just to try this place and it was absolutely worth it! The seafood was incredibly fresh and reasonably priced. The mussels were exceptionally delicious, and while the lobster took a bit longer to prepare, it was well worth the wait. 😋 Highly recommend for any seafood lover!"

"This place slaps. We got way more seafood than expected with the premium platter, and it was great… but honestly the best part were the oysters we added. The giant, fresh, local oysters served with nothing more than a lemon wedge were the best I’ve had and I think they knew it. Next time I’ll do 100 oysters over the platter… which isn’t a negative… but that’s how good those fresh oysters were."

"Quite simply the best place I have eaten in a long time! I’m a chef of nearly 30 years and this place seriously has mastered their market, I only wish I lived nearer so I could eat there all the time!
If you are looking for fancy, this is not the place, but if you are looking for honest fresh seafood at reasonable prices and enjoy the social aspect of communal outside no thrills dining, you simply won’t find better.
I wish there were places like this all over the UK, rather than golden arches and the like.
My partner and I shared the big seafood platter and it was superb. Beautiful fresh cooked mussels, langoustines, prawns, calamari, a whole lobster and crab clays all for £48.
We enjoyed it so much we went back for oysters and two fresh crabs to take away. The oysters were among the best, if not the best I have ever eaten - lovely plump and creamy - and I cheffed in Australia 16 years with beautiful produce.
Likewise the fresh dressed crab (yes I did cheat and get a dressed one, although whole crabs were also available) was probably the tastiest brown crab I can remember.
10/10 to these guys, keep up the great work!"

Fresh Scottish seafood but no alcohol indoors – the view from Oban as Scotland reopens to visitors
In my humble opinion, there is no better example of said fresh fish than that which is found at the Oban Seafood Hut, known locally as the Green Shack. Established by local fisherman John Ogden, this place has been dishing out sublime seafood dishes for more than 30 years. “It’s our first day back trading in six months today,” said co-owner Marion Ritchie.

Look for a green-painted shed on the pier, then join the line of cognoscenti waiting for simply sautéed scallops, grilled langoustine, and lobster, oysters, and mussels. Freshness is everything here.

No 17 the Promenade hotel review: a seafront stay with characterful rooms in Oban
Halfway up Scotland’s west coast, it’s a very likeable resort town, encompassing isle-speckled vistas, a whisky distillery, walks in Dunollie Wood and the Colosseum-like folly that is McCaig’s Tower — not to mention some of Britain’s finest cooked mussels, at Oban Seafood Hut. No 17 is a 15-minute walk from pretty much everything, including the train station; alternatively, venture north past ruined Dunollie Castle to the white-sand beach of Greenacre bay. Boat trips to seal colonies are also available, while inland there are heather-covered hills to hike and trout-filled lochs to fish.

One thing I would say is that the addition of the crabsticks, tiny peeled prawns and chewy squid cheapened the experience and was unnecessary. It was clearly not local or fresh. The muscles, squat lobster, langoustine, pickled herring, hot smoked salmon and crab were more than enough.
