Reviews Summary

Arbequina is lauded for its incredible Spanish tapas, with many dishes receiving high praise, especially the onion tortilla and charred cabbage. Diners consistently highlight the excellent service and cozy atmosphere. However, some found certain dishes, like the fried prawns, to be too salty or not worth the price for what they were.

"Delicious food, incredible service. We had most of the vegetarian options they do and each one was more delicious than the last. You must try the onion tortilla, it was incredible.
I would 100% recommend for everyone, the food arrives so quickly and you'll find you eat it much more quickly than that.
I would 100% recommend for vegetarians too, the foods available for us are significant and you can feel well fed on just these options alone."

Mitchell Smith

"Pretty good little independent restaurant in Oxford. A must-try for Oxford foodies. The tortilla was my most favourite dish of the night, but the pork tenderloin was a very close second. Staff were nice. Lighting and ambience was good. Natural wine selection decent. Would happily go back"

Sam Holland

"Spent our first night at Oxford here. The food is amazing. My favorite, surprisingly, is the charred cabbage. It has a very complex flavor with the creamy puree and crunchy hazelnuts. Other tapa dishes are all good except the fried prawns. It was a bit too salty and the prawns were tiny. It may be a good dish to go with a bottle of cold beer. Overall, it was an outstanding dinner."

The best restaurants in Oxford

Disguised by a vintage chemist’s sign above the door, there’s something incredibly modest about Arbequina, a tiny tapas joint with tiled walls, a stainless-steel counter and hard wooden stools. It’s all deceptively simple however, for as soon as you taste that first morsel of food, you know you’re somewhere special. From nduja sliced so thin it melts in your mouth to earthy beetroot borani served with tangy feta and crunchy walnuts, it’s food so good you’re invariably tempted to order more, succumb to that second bottle of vino and wonder why you’ve never been before.

Opened in 2016 Arbequina set out to create a charming Restaurant in the heart of Oxford serving Tapas style dishes with flavours you would expect from Spain and more!. Much like in Spain in the Restaurant you will find a long bar where you can enjoy both the food and drinks seated at, however, if that is not for you regular seating is also available. While you enjoy the taste of tapas why don’t you tuck in to a tipple of their expertly crafted drinks from wonderful wines to some classic cocktails.

Oxford travel guide: Best things to do and where to stay for a 2023 city break

Retaining its original “Pharmacy” shop-front signage and “tapas” menu, Arbequina is unsuspecting to the average passer-by. But on learning the team comprises Ben Whyles and Rufus Thurston of Oli’s Thai (now sadly closed), this spot is bound to exceed any expectations. Plates are both classic (patatas bravas) and punchy (pork belly with crackling and mojo verde), with thoughtful sourcing of ingredients – from the table olive oil to spices from nearby Maroc Deli.

If I had to name the best restaurant in Oxford, there’s a good chance that Arbequina would be my answer. Rather, this chic, Spanish-inspired, tapas-style restaurant wouldn’t be out of place in the hip corners of East London.
