Reviews Summary

Diners praise The Coconut Tree Oxford for its authentic Sri Lankan street food, vibrant atmosphere, and creative cocktails. Many highlight the extensive vegan options and recommend dining in groups to sample a variety of dishes. However, some reviews mention occasional issues with food temperature and consistency, with a few finding portions small for the price.

"We booked because of the large vegan section, but came away so impressed with everything about it. Food was incredible, varied and delicious. All the wait staff were the right level of friendly and helpful but leave you to your evening. The playlist was top tier and they make a good old fashioned- would highly recommend."

Matt Lenton-Magor

"We had a pleasurable experience at dining in coconut tree. Special compliments to staff who were amazing and very hospitable.

Positives: Great ambience, lot of spaces to seat, great staff and overall a nice atmosphere!

Negatives: Food, don't know why but food served was on bit colder side. Recipes are great, but taste are similar.

We ordered egg hoppers, they were great. Jafna Mutton curry was underwhelming, cold and even bit undercooked. Devilled Prawns were okay.

Decent Drinks.

Total bill: £60.5 (for two people), Including food, drinks and services."

Kunal Kothekar

"Extortionate prices for small portions. For example, 4 string hoppers cost £4. Food tasted too bland for a Sri Lankan restaurant. We went to the Oxford branch since we had a good experience in their Cheltenham branch in 2022. We soon got to to know the quality of dining degraded since then.

The mocktails were good. Would not recommend for a good and authentic dining experience.
Also would have been nice for the waitress to explain the “optional” service charge before payment."

The best restaurants in Oxford

Sitting on a busy street corner at the foot of South Park, The Coconut Tree is hardly reminiscent of Sri Lanka but step inside and the aroma of sambol, spices and kotthu will instantly transport you to a market stall in Colombo. Roughly hewn wooden tables, plain enamel dishes and patient staff willing to explain every dish on the menu combine to give it a wonderfully relaxed vibe. It’s best to arrive in a group and order as many dishes as you can so you get to taste them all - they’re that good.

11 Best Vegan Restaurants In Oxford (Tasty Plant-Based Eats)

Sri-Lankan food fills the menu at The Coconut Tree – from curries and noodles to salads, there are plenty of dishes to choose between, even if you’re vegan. The pineapple curry is a particular favourite amongst locals, though we adore the fiery sri-tato dish (spicy fried potatoes, in case you couldn’t work that out). Grab a cocktail and enjoy the evening mulling over good times and even better food.

8 Amazing Asian Restaurants in Oxford

Coconut Treeis on the edge of town (St Clements) and brings to Oxford what there was absolutely none of before: Sri Lankan food!. The Coconut Tree came to life when the owners decided to share their home cuisine with us Oxfordians. I’m so glad they did: the hoppers (crispy egg pancakes) and kottu (meat, veg and roti in a delicious messy pile) brought back wonderful memories of my trip to Sri Lanka.

The Coconut Tree prides itself on explosive flavors (in a good way). While South Asian food can often be very heavy, The Coconut Tree is full of extremely fresh flavors, with a heavy dose of vegetables and fish. As you would expect from a Sri Lankan restaurant, I love the hoppers (you’ll want the egg hopper) and kotthu (with the best chopped up rotti).
