What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Hip Chip is celebrated for its excellent fish and chips, featuring crispy, non-greasy batter and flavorful chips. While many praise the food quality and generous portions, some reviews point to inconsistent service and a less than ideal atmosphere. The unique decor and music memorabilia add to the overall experience for some diners.
"First visit since they moved to the new premises.
Chicken fillet burgers excellent - big tasty fillet. Only minor complaint is it would be better with a seeded bun. Chips did not look the best I have to be honest but tasted fantastic - portion maybe a wee bit tight, could have done with another scoop.
Only minor complaint is they could do with tidying up behind the counter a bit.
In conclusion excellent quality and highly recommend."

"Avoid this chippy!!! We came here as a group to enjoy some fish and chips, but immediately the energy was off. The girl at the counter was icy cold and unhelpful. My friend asked if she could fill up her water bottle and was told that she should probably buy one as they cannot guarantee the water is clean! As we sat down we looked up the other reviews and saw that people did not like the food here. We laughed at the reviews and thought they were dramatic. Then the food arrived. The girl practically tossed the food on the table and when we asked who a portion of chips was for, she said she didn’t know, and walked away! The fish here was okay, but the burgers were dry, thin and tasteless. Extremely disappointing. We could not finish them. The most shocking part of the dining experience was tasting the pots of gravy and mayonnaise. The mayo was absolutely not mayo. It was sour and more like cream. The gravy was more solid than expected. We did a double blind survey with two members of the group where we gave them one chip with gravy and one with mayo and asked them to guess which was which. The first person was actually given 2 gravy chips, but guessed that one was gravy and one was mayo. The next two people were given one gravy and one mayo and could not discern the difference. The takeaway here is that the sauces were tasteless and quite frankly unsettling (Dr. D, Anika BSc, Ben MRes 2025). And we should’ve stayed in England. Wouldn’t even recommend to an enemy."

"Really good fish and chips place. I did go here after drinking four Daisys at Bushmills (best drink of our trip), but I don’t think that affected my rating 😂. The batter on the fish was great- crispy and not too thick- and the food is freshly prepared."

Bushmills Taste Trail Festival Weekend
The Hip Chip is Bushmills oldest traditional fish and chip shop serving great food since 1992, winning many awards along the way. Earlier this year they expanded their premises to include a bright and airy seating area. An extensive menu to sit in or takeaway is full of firm favourites.
Places to eat
Both Flash in the Pan and the Hip Chip are good and have won awards, but we reckon the Hip Chip just edges it (though they don’t do mushy peas). You can ring in your order ahead, so you don’t have much of wait when you get there.
Dunseverick to Bushmills: Causeway Coast Way
Southwest of Bushmills, along the B17 (Priestland Rd) is a large and affordable bed and breakfast. While somewhat out of town, this accommodation exceeded our expectations.
