The Briny came as a welcomed addition to Southsea’s beachfront, which had long been pining for a fine dining restaurant with a view. Boasting a terrace overlooking the beach, and a chic beach hut vibe interior, The Briny is one of Portsmouth's top restaurants. I'm most excited about FISH's introduction in Old Portsmouth (just opposite A Bar). Having taken over the old Viviers site, FISH seemed to have transformed this little camber. Speaking to a man in The Bridge Tavern, he told us that since opening, FISH has not only made it easier for local fisherman to drop off their daily catches, but they're also paying good rates.

For evenings that call for a touch more elegance, The Briny on Clarence Esplanade is the place to be. Their gourmet offerings would make even Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction nod in approval. Although their menu changes as often as Portsmouth’s weather, standouts include halibut, melt-in-the-mouth venison, and a lamb rack that makes you wish sheep were endless.

The flagship restaurant of The Coastal Kitchen Family, who bought the seafront venue in 2017 and have transformed it from a traditional fish and chip restaurant into the seafood and wine bar it is today, The Briny is open from breakfast through to dinner seven days a week, apart from Monday breakfast when they take a break to reset and restock.

I’ve only actually managed to eat there twice as they’re always booked up so get your booking in if you want some oysters while looking out to sea. Their cocktail menu is delightful and the interiors are decorated beautifully. Since lockdown they’ve been offering a takeout service from a window hatch that I definitely need to try ASAP.

For a relaxed breakfast/brunch, The Briny packs a punch with sample dishes including smoked haddock, the vegan breakfast and house muesli. The bar staff were so kind and made me feel very comfortable. I’m very gluten intolerant and they have a menu specially for allergens, which was such a bonus. The food was great, definitely recommend 🌟

Likewise, further down the promenade by the Hovercraft, ‘The Beach Club’ serves cocktails with a sea view and also offers a discount to our guests.

Portsmouth is a vibrant city with so much happening... Many pass through, using the channel ferries, but it is so much more than just a port.
