In 1997, the Boglione family moved into West London's picturesque Petersham House, which handily had a disused plant nursery on the grounds. They channeled their love of antiques and plants and passion for sustainability into restoring the nursery, which opened in 2004 selling furniture, bits and bobs and plants with a quaint tea room in the conservatory. Since then, this has expanded to the now Green Michelin-starred restaurant that stands today—there’s still a lovely tea room next door.

If your idea of outdoor dining is being surrounded by scented blooms, glasshouses and garden objets d’arts, then Petersham Nurseries Café is the place for you. It is a gloriously rustic environment, and pleasingly without pretence, but at the same time rather chic too. This ‘natural’ setting suits the wholesome and unfussy Italian-influenced cooking, which revolves around the seasons and often incorporates their own home-grown produce.

Garden centre” hardly does justice to Petersham Nurseries, which has morphed into a full-on lifestyle emporium selling not only things to plant outside but antiques and objets d’art with which to prettify your interiors. There is no lovelier setting in London to take tea, with tables and chairs scattered around a flower-bedecked courtyard in summer and, in winter or when the weather’s not so nice, set amidst the heady fragrance of the jasmine-scented greenhouse (though note that afternoon tea, from £60 for adults and £25 for children, is only served from Fridays to Sundays). The food offering picks up on the rus-in-urbe vibe with simple preparations of top-notch seasonal ingredients — roasted red pepper tartlet with mascarpone and pea shoots; meringue with charred Petersham grapes and tarragon syrup; rose-petal Bellinis — though as owners Gael and Francesco Boglione are revered as arbiters of Italian good taste, don’t be surprised when your buttermilk scones arrive on a splendid Florentine-style, hand-blown glass cake stand.

Once the vast back garden of the Boglione family, this house in Richmond now plays host to Petersham Nurseries, the garden centre-meets-lifestyle shop-meets-restaurant. Surrounded by greenery, it would be easy to forget that you are less than an hour from the centre of London. There are plenty of options: you can seat up to 120 people in the restaurant (or, opt for a more modest table of 18), or rent out the largest greenhouse and host a dinner for up to 70 guests – the perfect option for those wanting to create the feeling of a relaxed, al-fresco meal, without the weather angst.

Although we’ve been spending more time than ever in gardens over the past few years, none come close to the verdant surroundings of Petersham Nurseries. The flower-filled glasshouse restaurant has a heated pergola for maximum al-fresco comfort and serves thoughtful seasonal dishes such as risotto with kale, spinach and bottarga, seabass ceviche with lime, chilli and coriander, and lemon sole with beurre noisette and sea beets. Go for a long lunch or an early supper to leave time to browse the nursery and take home some new leafy friends to enhance your own outdoor space.

It has a beautiful shop full of objects I’d love to purchase if I could afford them, and several cafes and restaurants in the greenhouses. The restaurant has a Green Michelin Star and is housed in a beautiful pergola structure, with pink flowers spilling over the ceiling and framing a gorgeous meal.

Best for something casualFor a more relaxed afternoon tea in London, make for this next-level garden centre in leafy Richmond. During summer its wild-at-heart afternoon tea is taken in an outdoor courtyard, and a jasmine-filled greenhouse when the temperature drops. Seasonal tidbits bring out the flavour of top-notch, organic produce and are presented atop Florentine-style hand-blown glass cake stands.

While you can find this beloved English eatery at a Covent Garden outpost, we recommend heading to the location in Richmond in south London for a more immersive experience. Explore the original restaurant and garden center, where you can enjoy lunch or afternoon tea, and even pick up a plant on your way out.

From Richmond, it’s a sublime outdoor walk through the park until you come across Petersham Nurseries.

For a dining experience that feels like a secret garden, visit Petersham Nurseries Restaurant in Richmond. Set in a greenhouse surrounded by lush greenery, this place offers a secluded escape. The menu focuses on seasonal, organic ingredients, and the dishes are as beautiful as the setting.

Petersham Nurseries is one of the prettiest garden centres you can find. Among its ramshackle greenhouses, greenery is stacked, hanging and adrift around you. Purchase plants and gardening goodies and stop for lunch, or tea and a treat.

The Richmond site of Petersham Nurseries is a rustic choice for the likes of Madonna, Mick Jagger, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. About twice a month they host very popular prix fixe suppers. Reservations definitely required.
