2024 Review: The “stunning dining room with spectacular views, high above the Thames” at this grand mid-Victorian hotel in Richmond “retains a fine atmosphere”, and it serves “delicious cakes” at afternoon tea. “Many chefs have been through the kitchen here” and where more serious culinary occasions are concerned, verdicts are split: fans say it is “currently undergoing a renaissance”, but others feel (as they have for years) that “the food is only average and the service likewise”.

What: Although not in the heart of London, this country house hotel in Richmond boasts views of a more verdant kind. Overlooking the Thames just before its runs into the city, and surrounded by lush meadows, this beautiful spot feels close to a country escape (despite being a 20-minute train ride from the city). Enjoy classic dishes executed with flair and finesse, such as roast lamb rump with smoked cauliflower, peas, swiss chard, toasted pine nuts and mint jus.

To be honest I'm not sure why this is two Michelin star (The Petersham in Richmond is outstanding with 0 Michelin) but upon reflection it is a grand restaurant, there lots of tables to cover and this in itself when you're presenting food at this level, must be difficult. Despite the trivial issues it's still a great place to experiment with different flavours but its definitely not the best restaurant in the world.

We had a good stay here using the 3 nights for 2 August offer. We have eaten here many times in the past for family occasions but have never stayed here. The rooms are somewhat dated and they could do with some nice smelling candles in the corridors as there was a bit of a stale food smell.

Just like the last one on this list, this restaurant in Richmond offers panoramic views near the Thames that you could view right outside!. The restaurant is classy and offers modern British cuisine with French influences. They also have a good selection of wines.

There are a few wonderful restaurants near the main entrance of the park, like 144 on the Hill or The Petersham, where you can enjoy a well deserved meal after your walk. And don't miss the chance to catch a breathtaking sunset from the top of Richmond Hill!

Enjoy a meal at The Gate, or stay in and take advantage of the hotel's room service (during limited hours). Quench your thirst with your favorite drink at the bar/lounge. Cooked-to-order breakfasts are available daily from 7:00 AM to 10:30 AM for a fee.

The man we spoke to when we booked the hotel had a brilliant manner unlike the other staff. He was spot-on; warm, friendly, gathered what we wanted and we were happy with the room he reserved for us. I think his name was Jordan.
