What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Walrus Restaurant & Bar garners praise for its inventive tasting menus and exceptional Japanese milk bread, often described as a standout culinary experience. Diners appreciate the cozy atmosphere, attentive service, and the staff's ability to accommodate dietary needs. However, some reviewers note that certain dishes, particularly those featuring raw seafood or specific preparations like the lab-grown salmon, can be overly salty or not meet expectations, leading to a perception of being overrated by a few.
"Superb from start to finish. I ordered the tasting menu - every dish was excellent and just as memorable as the last. The Japanese milk bread is beautifully soft and delicious. The the little extra bites that arrive between some courses are a lovely bonus too. Excellent warm service. Would absolutely come again and wouldn't be surprised if this place was awarded a star very soon."

"Our taxi dropped us on the riverside but the entrance is on the other side just a ls a pointer for others. This place has come on since we visited the earlier much smaller venue. Excellent restaurant area which has a quality feel and they are certainly holding their own on the food. We came with our 2 daughters on a Saturday for the tasting menu. We had a great table looking over the river. Service by the young staff was efficient and friendly. Our daughters loved the Japanese milk bread as everyone seems to mention.. all the courses were lovely with favorites being the Mushrooms and also the sole. Slightly disappointed on the duck but that is being very critical.. overall very happy with the experience."

"Amazing from start to finish. We used a voucher for the tasting menu that we’d been given as a wedding gift having never been before and were blown away. The service is great, not too overbearing but informative and attentive. The food was 10 out of 10, every single course! The bread…out of this world. So good we had to take a loaf home! Highly recommend. We can’t wait to come back again. Thanks all!"

Review of The Walrus, Shrewsbury, Shropshire
At the Walrus, dubbed by one fan as 'the absolute best kind of local restaurant', you really do feel chef/owner Ben Hall is cooking specifically to delight a hometown audience. Since our previous review (at the end of May 2022), the venue has moved from Roushill to new premises in Lower Claremont Bank, but we are happy to report that nothing else has changed. The cooking is solid, generous and enjoyable, the output focused entirely on 'deliciousness'.
Best Shropshire Restaurants - Reviews & Restaurant Guide
2024 Review: Local lad Ben Hall worked at the acclaimed Gidleigh Park, among others, before teaming up with partner Carla Cook to launch this ambitious five-year-old; in November 2022, they upped sticks from their former premises in Roushill to a larger, ex-warehouse setting on Claremont Bank in the city centre. The “really excellent food” (tasting menu only on Fri/Sat nights) remains intact at what is, for fans, “the best restaurant in Shrewsbury”.
