Reviews Summary

The Thatched Tavern is lauded for its charming atmosphere, beautiful garden, and friendly service, making it a popular spot for Sunday lunch and a pleasant stop after coastal walks. While many praise the food quality, some reviews note smaller portion sizes or higher prices for certain dishes, impacting overall value for money for a few diners.

"Had a Sunday roast at The Thatched Tavern whilst staying in a holiday let nearby and wow! We were certainly not disappointed! The food was absolutely delicious, the service was excellent and the pub itself is charming with a gorgeous outside area. Would highly recommend a visit if staying in the area, we will definitely be returning."

Laura Finnegan

"We visited The Thatched Tavern last Sunday for a birthday lunch, while the experience had some memorable highlights, it didn’t quite meet expectations across the board.

The location is great, with a nice garden with sea views and the tavern itself is full of character. The service was good and staff made us feel welcome.

The food, however, fell short of our expectations. I ordered the slow-cooked beef rendang, priced at £18. While the flavours were good the portion size and presentation was underwhelming, especially given the premium price point. I had expected something more substantial and visually appealing. Unfortunately, it left me feeling a little disappointed and questioning the value for money.

Overall, while the service and setting made the lunch enjoyable, the quality and presentation of the food didn’t match the expectations set by the price and surroundings. We enjoyed our time together as a family, but I’m not sure we’d return soon for the food alone."

Fred Lamb

"I've been going around the area trying Sunday lunches at various pubs. The roast beef here was excellent, not overcooked and properly cooked vegetables, all very nicely presented. My only gripes are that the portion was on the small side and it was a tad expensive at £22 but still an excellent lunch in lovely surroundings."

Given that the South West Coast Path offers 630 miles to choose from, you might think the stretch between built-up Torquay and built-up Teignmouth was not the most alluring. But it’s actually a lovely half-day walk, with plenty of viewpoints and a couple of sharp inclines to help work up a sweat and an appetite. The 17th-century chocolate box-pretty Thatched Tavern is about halfway along, and its garden is gorgeous.

Best beach near Torquay? Maidencombe. Just look at it

Now, the Thatched Tavern is located a couple of minutes’ walk behind Maidencombe beach. Here is a point I cannot stress enough: after a long day beside the sea, there is nothing better – literally nothing at all – than walking into the pub, ordering a pint of Dartmoor Legend, and taking it to the beautiful beer garden for a well-earned sup. If you happen to do this on a Saturday, a member of staff may come up to you and ask if you fancy a pizza fresh from the oven.
