Our winner, Dastaan, is an Indian restaurant success story in one of the least likely places, at the side of an A road rather than in any restaurant-heavy town centres. The restaurant, the name of which translates as ‘story’, has received a number of accolades outside of TripAdvisor, from 2018 and 2019 Michelin Bib Gourmands (like Michelin’s star system for more budget-priced restaurants) to glowing praise from British chef Angela Hartnett MBE.

On the Michelin guide for Surrey and the recipient of two AA rosettes, Dastaan is undoubtedly an unmissable location for quality Indian cuisine. Celebrated for their generous portions, superb spicing and many layers of flavour, it is evident why Dastaan is one of the highest-rated restaurants in Epsom. The restaurant is perfect for an intimate dinner for two or a night out with friends for some tasty Indian food, with many vegetarian and vegan dishes available.

Dastaan has become a favourite restaurant of mine, despite its slightly out of the way location in Ewell in Surrey. Two senior chefs from Gymkhana set up shop here and are cooking better food than any that I have ever eaten at Gymkhana, or indeed in any of the current Michelin-starred Indian restaurants in London. You do not get much clue as to the calibre of the food from the very basic premises in a parade of shops, with bare, closely packed tables.

If you are looking to try something a little different, then a trip to Dastaan in Epsom is a must. Meaning “story”, Dastaan takes diners on a journey thousands of miles away through the flavours and spices of Northern India. Showcasing the tastiest authentic cuisine, all delivered with a contemporary twist, the dishes here are masterfully crafted by the kitchen’s talented team and are available as part of inhouse and takeaway experiences.

Breathtakingly outstanding dishes” have put this “top-notch Indian” in the outer southwestern ’burbs firmly on every curry-hound’s map over the past nine years – it justifies a “long drive”, or “makes a bumpy ride on the 406 bus worthwhile”. Ignore the modest Ewell shop front off the A3 Tolworth turn-off, you’ll find cooking of “the highest standard” that rivals the best in the West End – and “at a truly affordable price”.

Delivering superb Indian cuisine with a contemporary twist in a rustic but cosy setting, this Surrey restaurant received the impressive endorsement of ‘good quality, good value cooking’, by the Michelin Guide. With an emphasis on Northern India, the background of this restaurant is deceptively simple. It possesses all the hallmarks of a prestigious London restaurant but without the hefty price tag.

Excellent Indian cuisine is served at Dastaan which has been been awarded a Bib Gourmand and has won over the critics. Chefs Sanjay Gour and Nand Kishor worked at a host of top restaurants previously including the highly acclaimed Gymkhana. They are passionate about their craft and nothing other than seasonal ingredients and freshly prepared food will do.

This bright, casual cafe might seem unassuming, but Dastaan is now recommended by the Michelin guide!. Helmed by two Mumbai-taught chefs who are veterans of Gymkhana (detailed above), Dastaan is all about storytelling through food– especially the curries. (And this makes sense, as Dastaan literally means “a story”/”fable”/”tale” in Hindi.)

We have been to Dastaan a couple of times and the food is absolutely amazing!. Dastaan is located in Ewell and is run by two chefs with impressive culinary backgrounds and experiences. We would highly recommend it!

Not your cheapest Indian but you get what you pay for, quality ingredients. Can’t fault the food. Friendly staff who clearly care about the food.
