Another Silver Street favourite, you’d be forgiven for completely missing Rusty Shears, but it’s without a doubt worth finding. Accessed by the small courtyard just off Silver Street, you’ll find the most perfect tea shop and self-proclaimed ‘house of gin’. Rusty Shears have also recently expanded into the neighbouring property, with ‘The Coach House’ now home to their bar serving up gins and craft beers.

Rusty Shears is located just off Silver Street, so it is often overlooked, but we assure you it is a must-visit when coming to Whitby. They serve the tastiest homemade cakes and pastries, speciality teas, coffees and over 150 gins. They serve food from breakfast through to the late afternoon, and at weekends, Rusty Shears hosts bistro evenings where they give their chefs freedom to create exciting menus.

Hidden away on Silver Street away from the crowds, Rusty Shears is a hidden gem. Its interior is quirky with lots of Victoriana and interesting curios and also has a courtyard dining area, when the weather permits. Open from breakfast through to late afternoon and at weekends they have Bistro evenings where the chefs are given a free rein to produce an interesting but exciting menu.

Rusty Shears is a dog-friendly vintage café and restaurant in the heart of Whitby. Known for its amazing cakes and extensive selection of gins, it’s an incredibly popular eatery with both tourists and locals. With traditional vintage tearoom style interiors and food served on dainty floral-patterned china, eating here is a real treat due to its quirky yet homely atmosphere.

Quirky Rusty Shears serves up some of the town’s best cakes and bakes, with a Victoriana setting, sheltered courtyard and extensive gin menu, while The Blitz is a 1940s-themed tearoom by day, tapas bar by night. For a hearty Sunday roast and proper pint, head to White Horse & Griffin, a narrow pub as old as Captain Cook. It also has cottages and hotel rooms to hire.

Beckett’s Coffee Shop, Skinner Street; Bothams, Skinner Street; Cranberry Swamp, Skinner Street; Sherlock’s Coffee House, Flowergate; Java Café in Hudson’s Yard; The Rusty Shears in Silver Street; J’s Ice Cream Parlour and Café, Market Place. Humble Pie and Mash in Church Street offers a wide range of delicious pies and has an open fire for chilly days.

La Rosa Hotel and Tearooms and Bothams Tea Rooms come highly recommended for cake, and Rusty Shears Courtyard also has great reviews – their menu has over 100 gins, so that sold it to me. If it’s a Sunday Roast you’re craving while in Yorkshire, try Stables in Crossbutts.

Some popular options include The Abbey Wharf, Trenchers, Rusty Shears and The Magpie Cafe. You may have seen a lot of steps up to The Magpie, but you can enter on street level via the take-away, where there is a lift up to the restaurant!

The Dogachinos at Rusty Shears went down a treat with Maya and Lucia, such a quirky, friendly place and the staff are real dog lovers. If you are a gin fan, you’ll be spoilt for choice here and the food is amazing.

Rusty Shears is a real hidden gem in Whitby that’s perfect for families. They have a great range on their menu to suit even fussy eaters and there are lots of delicious homemade sweet treats for afters.

Delicious food, great gluten free options, lovely coffee, great service and very reasonable prices in a very welcoming atmosphere. Portions are very generous too!
