Overdraft Beer & Tacos - Winchester

We didn’t have anywhere booked for dinner on our first night in Winchester and we originally wanted to check out Piecaramba as it’s one of the most highly rated places to eat in the city, but as that was closed due to a staff party, we headed to a nearby bar called Overdraft Beer and Tacos instead. While it wasn’t our first choice, Overdraft Beer and Tacos certainly was a very good choice!. I had the pulled chicken in adobo tacos and Matt had the braised beef brisket tacos and we also shared a portion of loaded nachos.

However, Overdraft is usually first known as a craft ale bar with a huge rotating menu of unique drinks, so I am going to focus on the other half of the bar, which is the taqueria. It’s perfect for a snack alongside your drink or as a full meal. The tacos here taste incredibly fresh, due in part to the corn tortillas that are made on site, and there is a good selection of meat, veg and vegan options, as well as nachos that are made from said corn tortillas.

Although it’s classified as an English bitter by Beer Advocate and a Premium Bitter/ESB by Ratebeer, more specifically I’d call Ruddy Darter an amber ale, with its deep coppery-red colour. Andwell, the Hampshire brewery that makes Ruddy Darter, refer to it as a Ruby Ale, in a Premium Ale style. (Andwell, by the way, was founded in 2008; Ruddy Darter is their most recent beer.)

Yes, this is the least ‘secret’ of the restaurants on the list as it’s at the top of the High Street.
