Reviews Summary

The Plume of Feathers is praised for its delightful Italian tapas-style dishes, particularly the variety and quality. Diners often commend the charming courtyard garden and friendly service. However, some reviews mention inconsistent food quality and a less formal atmosphere, especially in the evenings.

"This is a fabulous restaurant opposite the Abbey. My parents live locally, and we joined them to celebrate their 82nd wedding anniversary. We had a private dining room as there were a few of us. The staff were great, friendly, and attentive. The FOOD was superb 👌 small plates of Italian deliciousness 😋 We will definitely be back and recommend everyone to eat here."

"We often pop into the Plume for a light lunch, especially in the courtyard garden. It does fabulous Italian small plates using authentic ingredients. We've never been disappointed. My family treated me to a birthday lunch recently and 5 of us chose 3 different plates each - it was a gastronomic delight."

"Italian Tapas – What a pleasant surprise!
I’d never had Italian tapas before, so this was a unique and delightful experience for me. I love Italian food, and the small portions are perfect for those who enjoy trying a variety of dishes without getting too full.

Location:
Right across from Sherborne Abbey. If you sit by the window facing the street, you’ll have a lovely view of the Abbey while you dine.

Food:
Absolutely delicious overall! We ordered the Wild Garlic Gnocchi (highly recommended), the Meatballs (you can choose with or without spaghetti), and the Green Salad with lemon dressing—which my husband enjoyed so much he ordered it twice!
The only disappointment was the Seafood Ragu. I couldn’t find any noticeable seafood in the dish, and it just tasted like plain pasta with tomato sauce. At £11, it didn’t feel worth the price.

Service:
Very friendly and helpful. If it’s your first time, the staff will explain how the ordering process works, which is a nice touch.

Overall:
We were very happy with both the food and the service, and would definitely come back to try more dishes!"

Best Sherborne Restaurants - Reviews & Restaurant Guide

It’s “worth going out of your way” to find this “idyllic, picture-postcard country pub”that sits betwixt the medieval church and village hall and was launched amid much excitement in 2023 by art guru Max Wigram (aka Mr Phoebe Philo), with Margot Henderson of London’s well-known Rochelle Canteen sprinkling stardust on the kitchen. Former Six Portland Road chef Nye Smith is on day-to-day duties, delivering “delicious retro style cooking that really packs a punch”, with everything from the “gutsy” fish soup to the “amazing” sauces “just top-notch”. There’s the odd grumble – prices can seem toppish and one diner felt that “a little more attention to the finer points would help, although overall it deserves to do well”.

The ancient, creative market town with two castles that Charles Dickens loved

A grand, 18th-century Georgian mansion with medieval roots, The Sherborne was leased in 1850 by the great Shakespearean actor William Charles Macready. He was regularly visited by his friend, Charles Dickens, and you can admire the Macready Screen – an elaborate picture panel created by the duo – during a visit. The site was recently revamped and now hosts a revolving gallery of local artists’ work.
