Reviews Summary

Betty's Café Tea Rooms is a beloved institution, celebrated for its elegant ambiance and exquisite afternoon tea experience. Diners frequently praise the attentive service, charming decor, and delightful cakes and scones. However, some find the prices high for the portion sizes and certain food items, with occasional complaints about noise from live music and disappointing hot food.

"We had a wonderful and memorable experience at Betty’s in the Belmont room. I love treating my Auntie to afternoon tea here for a yearly tradition. Thank you to Eva for being so warm, friendly and attentive on our special day. And thank you for bearing with me whilst I fussed over my auntie’s gluten free food!! We were in safe hands and the food and drinks were as wonderful as they always are."

Cariss O'Hara

"Our family had a fantastic afternoon tea at Betty Tea Room in York! We queued for 15 minutes at the entrance—totally worth it. Ordered two afternoon tea sets, a burger, a rosite, and a salad. The portions were huge (way beyond expectations) but everything tasted amazing. The elegant decor and professional service (staff in suits even took photos for us!) made it a perfect experience. Highly recommended!"

Hall ZHANG

"Betty’s is a lovely place to eat. It’s very welcoming. The staff are so friendly and helpful. The cake prices are high and the portions are small. As I’m a tourist I ordered a rascal since I’ve never heard of them before. Turned out to be the most comical and lovable cake I’ve ever seen (and I did enjoy it too). I would come again to get the afternoon tea. Be prepared to queue outside and spend inside. It still manages to be a nice experience. And ignore my photo of the rascal as it’s not typical of what the food looks like."

You’ll be spoilt for choice if you fancy a spot of tea and cake in York as there are plenty of tea rooms to be found dotted around the city’s cobbled streets. Bettys is the most famous tea room in town - it has been serving cakes and pastries to the people of York since 1936 so has definitely perfected the art of afternoon tea. The interior of Bettys York was inspired by the Queen Mary ocean liner and we think the Lady Betty Afternoon Tea that is served here is an experience worthy of royalty, with delicate sandwiches and exquisite cakes served on the finest bone china and washed down with an optional glass of Champagne.

A York landmark in St. Helen’s Square, the decorative, old-world-glamour interiors of Bettys Cafe Tea Rooms takes cues from the Queen Mary ocean liner. An institution since 1936, Bettys, while famed for its pretty cakes, delicate confectionery, and dainty afternoon teas, the lunch and dinner offering is equally impressive – go for a mighty Swiss breakfast rosti or chicken schnitzel with pommes allumettes – served on the best silverware. The gooey rascal sundae is a formidable mix of crumbled chocolate cookies, ice cream and fresh cream served in a fancy tall sundae glass – a lesson in restraint if you wish.

Where to Enjoy Afternoon Tea in York | Food & Drink

One of Yorkshire’s most iconic places to dine, Bettys was established in 1919 by Swiss baker and confectioner Fritz Bützer, who came to England to start his own business and settled in the town of Harrogate. In 1937 he opened his first tearoom in York – then the country’s confectionary capital – and fitted it with a stylish interior that was inspired by his time spent aboard the Queen Mary. A bookable afternoon tea here starts at £34.95 and is served in the tearoom’s exquisite Belmont Room, which has been painstakingly restored and still boasts many of its original period features.
