What Travellers Say

Reviews Summary

Skosh is widely praised for its inventive small plates and the unique 'Hen's Egg' dish, offering a memorable dining experience with exceptional service. However, some diners find the high price point not entirely justified by the overall flavor profiles, and occasional issues with plating standards have been noted.

"Fantastic place! We went for lunch, and split 9 dishes amongst three of us (and then also had a small dessert to share), which was a perfect amount of food. Everything was delicious! Honestly I didn’t understand quite what I was ordering, but never fear, it was all tasty. Atmosphere was great and the staff were fab.

We had the signature ‘egg’ - I couldn’t find a description of it anywhere but it’s a cheesy mousse with layers of cheesy stuff throughout. There were some crackers in there and some mushrooms (or something similar). So good!!! Would definitely get again on another visit."

ruby jones

"Surprisingly bad. I went to this restaurant with my girlfriend to celebrate and had high expectations considering the high price and good reviews (including a Bib Gormand from Michelin). Ordered £120 worth of food, with most of it being mediocre/passable at best. All the food looked good but tastewise some were sorely lacking. The onion flatbread was good, the crispy lamb belly was great and the tempura broccoli was amazing. On the other hand the fried chicken massaman was chewy where fried chicken should be crunchy, the jersey chaat was tough and just tasted like boiled potatoes, the koftas were passable but I’ve had far better in York for far cheaper, the pork belly tasted like cheap Peking duck (even though the meat itself was obviously high quality). The mackerel pho was downright terrible; soft skin on the mackerel, watery, tasteless. Portion sizes were small, but this is to be expected in a fine dining establishment.

The service itself was good, our server was attentive, but we were served food on chipped plates on three separate occasions (I only bothered taking photos the second and third time because I was so surprised at the low standard). Given the high price, this is unacceptable.

The restaurant atmosphere was quite good generally, very modern, although some of the decor was very tacky ( gorilla head lightbulb, pig ). I’m personally ambivalent on the open kitchen.

Overall, not worth the high price, other restaurants in York offer better food for cheaper. Fine dining is supposed to justify the high price and small portions with exceptionally tasty food, and the food at Skosh wasn’t that."

"Loved this place. Relaxed atmosphere. Fabulous staff with Amelia being particularly helpful and funny making a fuss of us on our wedding anniversary. The food was exceptional and not too much which meant we left full but not bloated 🎉🥂❤️"

10 of the best restaurants, delis and takeaways in York | York holidays

A rare purveyor of relaxed good vibes and seriously on-point cooking, chef Neil Bentinck has created a buzzy restaurant that’s unusually broad in its appeal. Food nerds can sit at the open-kitchen counter to get close to the action; elsewhere, guests will find themselves charmed by Skosh’s friendly staff and disarmed by a small and sharing plates menu which, in its fusion of global influences, is playful and arrestingly tasty. House classics include buttermilk fried chicken with a yuzu and brown butter hollandaise and the “hen’s egg” (a savoury trifle that hinges on an outrageous cheese velouté).

The best restaurants in York

This casual Micklegate hotspot, with its Scandi-like interiors and open kitchen, doesn’t just stick to one cuisine but several with aplomb. Watching chef Neil Bentinck and his brigade turn out casual plates of Whitby crab tostadas, garlicky-cheesy Chinese youtiao, and lime-fried mussels in foamy, sweet-spiced masala, is mesmerising. The famous “Hen’s Egg”, a rich, creamy, whipped-cheese foam shrouding layers of yolk and crispy mushroom, is an absolute must.

Best Dinner Places to Eat in Gilberdyke

Making waves since it opened on the increasingly hipsterish Micklegate, everything about Skosh (a short form of the Japanese sukoshi, meaning ‘a little bit’), from the industrial lighting, gunmetal grey walls and steel bench seating, says ‘modern British dining’ but that would be doing it a huge disservice. There are influences from Japan, the Middle East and Thailand, with judicious use of ingredients like edible flower seeds, sorrel emulsion and kombucha (fermented, lightly effervescent sweetened black or green tea) pectin. Saddleback pork, slow cooked and cubed, salmon caviar whipped to a cream and hake with a cauliflower puree topped with dukkah (a mix of nuts and spices) come close to perfection.

The best dinner restaurants in York, according to TripAdvisor reviews

The word ‘Skosh’ comes from the Japanese word meaning ‘small amount’ - a nod to the small plates for which the restaurant is known. You can expect a lot of Asian influence in the tasting menus - from venison dumplings, puris of Whitby crab and venison tataki to duck egg and potato congee. One customer from Liverpool simply said: "Setting is small and intimate with tables. Food was incredible. Staff knowledge was top notch- and they were helpful in guiding us with recommendations.
