Reviews Summary

Golden Crown Panaderia is a beloved neighborhood bakery offering a unique blend of New Mexican flavors in its handmade breads, pizzas, and pastries. Diners rave about the delicious green chile crust pizzas and biscochito cookies, along with the friendly service and cozy atmosphere. While most reviews are glowing, some have found the offerings to be just 'ok' when expecting a full-service bakery.

"This place is a gem nestled in the neighborhoods of downtown. When I first arrived I thought they may have closed early. Good thing they weren’t. The lights in the dinning area were dimmed and makes a relaxing vibe to enjoy your dinner.

I ordered a 12” green chili crust pepperoni pizza and 3 biscochitos, chocolate, cappuccino, and original. The pizza 10 out of 10. The green chili crust gives that hidden spice with the pepperoni and cheese slice. Highly recommend getting the green chili crust with whichever pizza tickles your fancy. The biscochitos are a sweet treat afterwards. I would recommend those as well.

After talking with the staff, they told me about the history of Golden Crown Panaderia. Then showed me the original oven which they still use today to bake their pastries. They also have on display in the lobby of the presses they use to make their empanadas.

I would recommend to visitors and locals to come by and check this place out."

"This is such a hidden gem! Their pizza is made like no Otha place in town! Next time I want to try the green chile crust. The biscochitos are delicious. They even have a vending machine selling biscochitos when they’re closed! Their fruit empanadas are perfect. Not too sweet with a soft crust that tastes like their cookies. The service here is always so friendly! Look into their history and all their multiple ovens online! They have a great Facebook page. This place is one of a kind."

"What a charming and unique little place! I am a Canadian visiting Albuquerque and my local friend brought me here. She had been coming for many years and highly recommended it. The place is small yet charming and quaint with very unique decor at a homey atmosphere. The young gentleman at the counter was extremely welcoming and kind to us. He greeted us with a free cookie as it is a policy for them to give kids a free cookie! This made us laugh, but made us feel very well. My friend ordered a personal pizza with a green chilli crust and I had a cinnamon sugar Tostada with a large coffee. When I placed the order, our friend serving us allowed us to see the tostadas being made in the back. So kind of him! The coffee was wonderful and the kind gentleman made it just the way I liked it. The Tostada was something very unique. It was crunchy sweet and a perfect pairing with my coffee . My friend’s pizza looked super delicious. We sat outside for a bit and then came to sit on the inside. Most people around us were families enjoying pizza. They sold entire loaves of bread as well as coffee to take home. They have a unique assortment of treats, including savoury treats, like green chilli and cheese twists. All and all I highly recommend this charming little establishment. I would probably be a regular if I lived in Albuquerque."

The Best Restaurants In Albuquerque, New Mexico

Touted as an ‘old-fashioned neighbourhood bakery’, the family-owned and operated Golden Crown Panaderia specialises in both sweet and savoury offerings with an emphasis on New Mexican flavours. Located in the Old Town area, this venue is sure to appeal to a wide range of tastes with its delicious selection of baked goods, pizzas, and sandwiches. Some of the sweet treats available for guests to enjoy range from the locally famed New Mexico favourite, biscochito cookies — including blue corn, sugar-free, chocolate, and cappuccino varieties – and empanadas in several fruity offerings.

Tucked between Old Town and the Wells Park neighborhood, this aromatic, down-home-style bakery opens early but is especially well known for two things: its hearty green-chile bread and its hand-tossed (thin-crust) pizzas made with blue corn, peasant, or green-chile dough. You can also order hot cocoa, cappuccino, an award-winning local IPA or lager (or wine), some biscochitos (the official state cookie), fruit-filled empanadas, sandwiches, and a popular coffee milkshake. Take out or dine in (perhaps on the pet-friendly patio).

10 Best Restaurants in Albuquerque to Eat at Right Now

Old Town ABQ's Golden Crown Panaderia has been family run since 1972. The classic panaderia turns out sandwiches, pizza, pastries and cookies all day long, but it’s their beloved breads that draw crowds (and supplies many restaurants and hotels around town). The showstopper is the New Mexico green chile loaf filled with tomatoes, onions, cilantro, green chile, Parmesan cheese and a secret blend of spices.

The Sprudge Guide To Coffee In Albuquerque

It is very hard to wait patiently in line surrounded by Golden Crown Panaderia’s legendary smell: the toasty cinnamon and sugar melting off of baking biscochitos—cookies that cannot be described, and must be tasted. With burlap bags of green coffee on the floor and sugar and flour stacked chest-high along the entryway, the customer area feels like the antechamber to all that is behind the counter: half-hidden ovens churning out blue corn crust pizza, Original New Mexico Green Chile Bread, fruit empanadas, and trays and trays of biscochitos. Plants cluster in the windows, loaves sit plump and hot on their racks, the coffee is house-roasted and the biscochitos come in flavors like chocolate, cappuccino, and blue corn.

10 top pizza spots in Albuquerque according to Yelp

Golden Crown Panaderia "This place is such a gem! My mom and I came here twice during my two-week visit in ABQ. I'm from NM, and I've never been here... Both times, we ordered a large veggie pizza with green chile, on a blue corn crust. We also ordered it without cheese (vegan) and it was absolutely delicious. Crisp and flavorful. The pizza also came with a few extra biscochitos. My mom enjoyed one of their home brewed teas and I indulged in one of the many beers they offer." -Nydia V.

Seeing The Sights in Albuquerque

The highlight of the Old Town area was the Golden Crown Panaderia, where we were given a cookie by the cheerful guy behind the counter as soon as we walked in (“all kids get free cookies here”) and where we enjoyed some tasty coffee and garlic cheese bread on the porch. We wanted a loaf of the famous green chile bread, but at $8.95 per, we couldn’t justify that kind of outlay. The interior of the place looks like a combination historic adobe building and science experiment.
