Ever since I lived in Long Beach and was a 10 minutes drive from their Downey location, this bakery has had a permanent spot on my best places to eat list. Now that they’ve opened a Buena Park location in OC, I’m often tasked with grabbing some potato balls, chicken croquettes, fruit tarts, and all the other tasty treats for family parties. If you don’t want to wait in their typical line out the door, I recommend ordering online for pick-up to make things easier.

Get breakfast to-go at the hotel (save it for lunch later) and make your way over to Porto's Bakery (yes, that Porto's) and get ready to dive into the freshest baked goods by just driving down the street from the hotel. Get there early (you're up anyway right?) and enjoy the richest coffee, yummiest donuts, stuffed potato balls, cheese rolls, and famous guava pastries all without having to drive to Burbank, Glendale or Downey. Did I mention get there early?

A hearty, vegetarian soup that's slow-cooked with lentil, onion, carrot, celery, turnip, butternut squash, and potato, it is finished with sautéed Tuscan kale, parmesan cheese, and extra virgin olive oil. Who knew that we’d find a new favorite hangout in Buena Park?. A little back story: we used to live an work in Buena Park long before the kids were born, so it’s always been a bit of a second home for us. The Source OC is a new and awesome spot that I wish was around when we lived there.

After arriving over to Orange County, California we found the madness of the locals over bakeries. There were plenty numbers of bakeries lining the street. We played a choosing game, went into a shop and landed in our first bakery from Orange County which was Porto’s Bakery and Cafe.

We’ve been fans of Porto’s since we lived in LA, and this is by far the fanciest Porto’s we’ve seen. Our go-to order is Potato Balls and Cheese Rolls, which we brought on the plane with us. There are multiple lines to manage the crowds and plenty of seating.

When it comes to good food, Porto’s is in a class of its own. In fact, a few years ago it earned the number one spot on Yelp’s Top 100 Places to Eat in the US!. We kicked off our second day in Buena Park by heading there for breakfast…and a few other treats!

While you’ll find several regional locations, I visited the Buena Park location on Beach Boulevard. Yelp voted Porto’s Bakery & Cafe the #1 Restaurant. The family-owned business still uses many of the original recipes Rosa brought from Cuba in 1963.

The following day, I had coffee and a passionfruit smoothie at Porto Bakery, a favorite Buena Park bakery run by the same Cuban family that established it in 1963. I tried the famous cheese and peppers potato ball and a croqueta de pollo.

The potato balls are legendary, as is the entire menu of sandwiches, cakes, and beverages at Porto’s Bakery and Café. The family-owned café features original recipes brought over from Cuba that have made them a top pick for locals.

Anyhoo, since I had to reschedule my flight back home due to some setbacks and she wanted to try some other stuff from the bakery, we might as well go back to Buena Park in a quick one day visit this weekend.

For something more casual, grab a bite at Porto’s Bakery & Cafe or slurp down some noodles at Ramen & Tsukemen TAO, granted the Michelin Guide distinction of Bib Gourmand for its great value.
