More than just seafood (even though why you’d order anything outside of that is beyond us), the menu offers a mix of both healthy and hearty dishes, like a 10-ounce grilled New York strip with hoision-sriracha sauce or a seared tofu curry with coconut curry sauce. One of the stars of the menu is the spicy ahi tuna tower, which is as beautiful as it is delicious with layers of marinated big eye ahi with fresh avocado salad, wasabi and wonton crisps.

Ginger feels classy but laid-back at the same time, making it an excellent place for travelers to eat while on vacation, but you’ll also find a lot of locals here too. The décor is modern yet retro, and every seat in the house is comfortable and just far enough out of the way from the action that you can have a great conversation with whomever you bring along. This is a great place for a cocktail even if you don’t plan to eat, but you should eat, too, as the food is very good.

If there’s one common thread I hear about restaurants in Alaska in general – not just Anchorage – it’s that food is really expensive. I agree – that’s pretty universally true, unless you’re going for a cheap, casual option (like Tia’s, more below) or get thrifty by ordering appetizers or cooking at your non-hotel accommodations. Ginger is the one place I’ve been recently where I feel like – despite the price – you’re absolutely getting your money’s worth in the portion sizes.

After the beer tour I went to an orgasmically good restaurant called Ginger in downtown Anchorage. The waitress, Gina, was rather aggressive, but I like bossy, terrifying women who force me to drink cocktails, so it was all good. The drinks here are gorgeous, and the ahi tower, duck breast, and mee krob were all spectacular as well..
