Simon & Seafort's Saloon & Grill

Known locally as Simon’s, Simon & Seafort’s is a beautifully located restaurant offering stunning views of the Alaska Range and Cook Inlet of Mount Susitna. Opened in 1978, Simon’s has established something of a community of its own, with regular visitors and locals frequenting the restaurant’s inviting dining room on a daily basis. The menu boasts signature shellfish dishes including Asiago-almond crusted scallops, served with mashed Yukon potatoes, seasonal vegetables and beurre blanc, and Norton Sound Alaskan red king crab leg.

Windows overlooking Cook Inlet vistas, along with the high ceilings and a classic brass-and-wood interior, have long made this an Anchorage favorite. The menu includes prime rib and other steak-house classics, but the main attraction is fresh Alaska seafood. The best tables are adjacent to the tall windows facing the water, and reservations are recommended.

You can eat on the restaurant/grill side or in the cafe, or order food and watch a movie while you eat in the theatre too!)

For a second option to celebrate your special occasion in Alaska, many locals will recommend Simon & Seafort’s. I’m a bit more on the fence as I actually felt unwell after eating here on my last trip – but let me be clear: I was the only one in my John Hall’s Alaska tour group who felt ill, and my stomach is very weird when I travel. (Also, I had the open-face crab sandwich, which was awesome, but I think I’m developing a reaction to shellfish.) I do not think this was any fault of the Simon & Seafort’s team or the dish I had.

Definitely start your evening here with the “scratch margarita,” a house recipe that is served from a shaker like a martini. I arrived after sunset, too late to really appreciate the water view, but the old Alaska ambience of the Gold Rush days set the mood for a festive meal. One of my dinner companions recalled coming to Simon & Seafort’s for dinner before her high school prom and many tables were filled with locals celebrating special occasions, so it didn’t feel touristy.

Of the two I would pick Orso but mainly because I love the Mediterranean diet, really though, it is a toss up. At one time Orso was very popular and number one in Anchorage, but then started a stretch where they slipped, probably because they decided to go with their reputation and slacked off. But then they wised up and last time we ate there it was excellent.

Locally known as Simons, the restaurant has a view to die for. The restaurant is strategically located to allow you to enjoy the breathtaking Mount Susitna and the Alaska Range. However, the view does not beat the delicious American cuisine with the option to take the refreshing vegetarian and gluten-free options.

I have to say, Simon & Seafort's takes seafood to new heights!. Their buffet is a cornucopia of savory seafood delights that will have your taste buds doing a happy dance. With an impressive selection of fresh catches and an array of flavorful dishes, this place truly knows how to satisfy seafood lovers.

After spending all morning at The Anchorage Museum and needing to fill the time between that and our trolley tour, we stopped at Simon & Seaforts for lunch. My husband opted for the Salmon B.L.T, while I went for the Grilled Salmon and Chilled Shrimp Louie, hold the egg. Both of us enjoyed our selection.

Simon’s does not have an extensive amount of soy-free options, but they do have a Chef that is happy to come up with something on the fly. I tend to ask for the Halibut Cheeks and a veggie side as their Halibut Cheeks are the best in town!. They do not have a separate space to make allergy-free meals.

Simon & Seafort is very good, as others have said, and it does have a nice view if you can get a table by the window, but the atmosphere there is more like chain restaurants in the lower 48. If you were going to be there several days, I'd recommend it for a meal but just one day, I'd say skip it.
