The restaurateurs behind South Restaurant and Coffeehouse (pictured above) are also the masterminds behind two other stops on this list: Snowcity Café and Spenard Roadhouse. What differentiates South isn’t just the décor, the slightly off the beaten path location next to an industrial plot or the vibe — it’s the menu, which has more than 25 gin varietals, a rotating draft of local beer and high-end cuisine.

South Restaurant + Coffeehouse in Anchorage is a charming spot with an accommodating staff and top-notch cuisine. Even though the choice was limited when we visited, everything we tasted was phenomenal - from the French dip and mac n cheese with bacon to the cauliflower steak on zucchini noodles. Besides their substantial brunch, we also had a satisfying dinner experience, where we got to sample properly cooked local salmon, fresh vegetables, and even a special off-menu mac and cheese dish.

The French dip at South – Here’s another great sandwich tucked into a menu full of much flashier fare. French dips take me back to another era of Anchorage dining – the booths of Harry’s (deep cut!) in Midtown or the Eastside O’Brady’s, where I first learned the pleasure of dipping crispy bread into warm au jus. This dip packs all that nostalgia with tender sliced beef, caramelized onions, optional mushrooms (get them!), a glorious horseradish sauce and house-made jus.

South Restaurant and Coffeehouse is “an urban-chic spot featuring new American dining,” known for its “cocktails featuring local ingredients. Its owner, Laile Fairbairn, was a semifinalist for a 2023 James Beard Award for outstanding restaurateur.” The Crow’s Nest is located at the top of the Hotel Captain Cook’s main tower and features beautiful views of Anchorage and offers amazing food, specialty cocktails, and a celebratory atmosphere.

Southis a newer restaurant on the Anchorage scene that serves up unique and modern twists on a few favorite dishes and an exciting gin cocktail menu. South serves up one of my favorite brunches in Anchorage with a decent menu of morning cocktails.

South Restaurant + Coffeehouse is a beautiful and elegantly decorated sit-down restaurant. This is the perfect place for a date night or a fun Saturday brunch date with your girlfriends. Service is given for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

the decor and lighting is on point here, even in the coffeehouse. i’m also obsessed with their booths, especially the big round ones in the bar. perfect for quick hangover nap in-between bloodies.

I keep wanting to give this place a chance but I think we’re done. We went a few weeks ago and the wait was long but nothing out of the ordinary. Once seated we placed our order.
