Reviews Summary
White Spot Cafe is celebrated for its authentic diner experience, generous portions, and signature Alaskan dishes like the halibut sandwich. While many praise the friendly service and classic American comfort food, a few diners have found the halibut sandwich to be bland or the fries overcooked, though these appear to be minority opinions. The nostalgic ambiance and communal seating contribute to its charm as a local institution.
"Great little local spot with good food. The reindeer chili was super tasty. The halibut sandwich was a but bland but still good. The halibut melt had more flavor. The coleslaw was amazing. It was very creamy and sweet but wow, it was delicious. Great service."

"Small, no-frills family operation that actually feels like family when you’re there. Open kitchen where you can watch everything happen. Owner caught the fish that morning and battered it right in front of me. Hand-cut fries, both fried to perfection. Great spot for people watching while you eat. Authentic and unpretentious."

"What a great diner! Really good food in a traditional American diner setting. My wife had the chicken fried steak and the gravy was so good! I had the halibut sandwich - very solid. The fries are obviously had cut and were plentiful and perfect. If I lived in Anchorage, I’d eat here often."

The White Spot Cafe, established in 1946, is an old-school lunch counter that serves up a lightly battered halibut sandwich revered by Anchorage residents for decades. Similarly old-school and just as beloved is Arctic Roadrunner, which serves salmon and halibut burgers topped with traditional fixings and one of the best onion rings in town. Their dining room is a treasure trove of nostalgic Alaskana, and on nice days you can eat your lunch outdoors along Campbell Creek.

The halibut sandwich at the White Spot Cafe – I forbid you from eating this sandwich for the first time when you are not sitting at the bar in this historic Downtown hole-in-the-wall on Fourth Avenue. The halibut sandwich tastes best when you can watch it being made – fresh fish battered and fried golden, a squishy white bread bun pulled from the bag, iceberg, American cheese, and tartar stacked in a tower. That first bite is all crunch, salt and tang.
The White Spot, Anchorage, 7/30/21
The White Spot is in downtown Anchorage and even though the street out front was closed for repair the place was still packed with customers eating in and picking up to go orders. There are several tables but the best seats are at the counter overlooking the small kitchen show. They are known for the halibut sandwich but you’ll find lots of house made, fresh options here.
