Reviews Summary

12 Bones Smokehouse is a popular spot known for its creative BBQ flavors and standout sides like the corn pudding. While many praise the unique sauces and tender meats, some reviews mention dry brisket or pork and wish for more sauce variety. The casual atmosphere and fast service are consistent positives, making it a favored lunch destination for locals and visitors alike.

"I see some tough reviews here. I tasted all 3 ipas they had on tap and they were all decent. Ordered some food too. The pulled turkey was my favorite. The pulled pork and chicken were fine. Yeah maybe a little dry. It the sauces were nice for dipping. My daughter loved the Mac n cheese which was not especially fancy looking. The beans and collard greens were really good too. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. I bought a hat so everyone knows I’ve been here."

carl tabor

"I've heard about this place, so I decided to check it out. It has a cool atmosphere, but that's it. I got the brisket plate, mac n cheese, and collards. It's a pay before you eat, so I had a low bar. The food came out fast. The brisket was dry, and the Mac n cheese was bland and not good. The collards were really good. It felt like cafeteria food. The lady at the register was unhappy and miserable. Overall I wouldnot recommend going here. We got a few extra sides, and it's pricy and not good bbq. What a waste of money."

Robert James (SLASH_wisdom)

"Mid, at best. Highly disappointed in the brisket. Dry, lacking flavor, and very very lean. The pork ribs and the collards were the highlight of the dinner and that’s not really saying a ton.

Got the salt and pepper and the brown sugar ribs. Both were good but most guys in their backyard could probably do as good if not better, just probably not at scale. Ribs had more chew than I prefer but were flavored well.

Sauces mid."

Affordable Restaurants To Try In Asheville

One of Asheville’s longstanding favorite barbecue joints, 12 Bones takes a no-nonsense approach to delivering smoked meats and classic sides Monday through Friday and only until 4 pm. That’s right, this place does so well it doesn’t see the need to stay open on the weekends at the River Arts District location, an example of its commitment to being part of the local community more than catering to weekend crowds. Sandwiches are the cheapest way to go, but prices for a plate with two sides and cornbread hover around $10 and will more than fill you up.

The baby back ribs from 12 Bones check all the boxes—they’re tender, crispy, and caramelized—but they also add something new to the mix: wildly creative flavors. Rather than sticking to the typical vinegar-based Eastern barbecue sauce or tomato-based Lexington style, 12 Bones instead chooses a third option: sauces made with blueberry-chipotle, Cheerwine, and pineapple habanero. While ribs are the star dish, you can also get beef brisket, pulled pork, smoked turkey, and chicken.

But the beauty of everything new is how it springs from deep Carolina roots. Jovial chef Katie Button of Nightbell makes a cured duck heart that harks back to another era, and the impossibly popular 12 Bones (worth the long line) brings old-school, slow-smoked perfection to the barbecue scene. Similarly, you can taste the wood-fire goodness in every dish at Smoky Park Supper Club, or eat the whole hog on a single sandwich (well, figuratively at least) at Buxton Hall.
