There are lots of wood-fired ovens grilling pizzas in Asheville, but All Souls Pizza hovers at the top of the list for its commitment to locally sourced ingredients, even in the dough. At its most basic, a crust with cheese and some sauce, it’s a picky eater’s go-to, but layer on the additional toppings, and it can be anything from a flavorful standard to a truly innovative pie. At All Souls Pizza, snuggled in between the River Arts District and downtown, you can have your pie and eat it too, all while enjoying the easy, family-friendly atmosphere of the patio. One of the coolest parts is the seasonal garden boxes from which many ingredients on the menu are harvested.

One of the most distinctive pizza places out there, All Souls Pizza offers a sophisticated menu with some exotic variables in toppings and side salads, as well as other incredible creative dishes with a focus on local and seasonal ingredients. This is not your typical New York-like pizza parlor, it is an inventive and artisanal lovely place especially for dinner, where you can sit outside, and relax with a glass of wine on a warm night. The Great Asheville Gastro Challenge began on a wet and blustery Friday afternoon at All Souls Pizza, in Asheville’s River Arts district. Coming in from the cold, I could not have found a more welcoming place: the scent of a wood burning oven, Dwight Yoakum on the stereo, and some of the best pizza I’ve ever had. This partnership between Brendan Reusing (who opened up Chapel Hill’s Lantern with his sister, Andrea) and baker David Bauer focuses on fresh.

I was once halfway up an incline in Bent Creek when I stopped to ask a guy with a strange bag what he was up to. He was a mushroom forager, he told me, for All Souls Pizza, which should tell you about the lengths that this place goes to source local ingredients. Those toppings, like cheeses from North Carolina growers, go on pizzas made from a naturally leavened sourdough that spends days fermenting.

It’s no secret that we love pizza, especially the ones coming out of All Souls Pizza. We typically get one per person and though cheese and mushrooms typically are our go-to’s, when we go to All Souls we almost always order whatever the special is that day. The outdoor dining is great…there are numerous picnic tables on the paved patio and even a few on the lawn next to the flowers.

All Souls, an artisanal pizzeria in the River Arts District, uses a custom stone mill to process heirloom varieties of wheat and corn, creating fresh dough from the resulting flour. It then bakes pizzas topped with seasonal ingredients in a wood-fired oven to attain the perfect char. Like West Asheville, it’s no secret that the River Arts District houses some of the best restaurants in Asheville, including the famous 12 Bones Smokehouse and White Duck Taco. All Souls Pizza is another local spot with a small but artisan pizza menu filled with sandwiches, salads, soups, and olives. They also offer a gluten-free polenta crust substitution.

All Souls Pizza – If you’re looking for a place to dine al fresco, look no further than All Souls Pizza. It has a beautiful garden complete with picnic benches and plenty of flowers, making it the perfect place to eat out on a summer afternoon or evening. Oh, and the pizza’s not half bad, either.

All Souls Pizza, from Lantern’s Brendan Reusing and dough genius David Bauer, proves that Southern pizza is not an oxymoron. And Bandidos, in west Asheville, makes tacos from local trout. There’s only one place to go for dessert: French Broad Chocolate Lounge on Pack Square.
