Reviews Summary

Burial Beer Co. South Slope Taproom is lauded as a top brewery in Asheville, celebrated for its creative craft beers, particularly IPAs and stouts, and its surprisingly gourmet food offerings. The massive, multi-level space provides a fun and quirky atmosphere with ample indoor and outdoor seating, making it a popular spot for locals and visitors alike. While the beer selection and food consistently receive high praise, some patrons note occasional long wait times for service and drinks during peak hours, and the loud music may not suit everyone's preference.

"This is my favorite brewery in Asheville. We fell in love with this brewery their first time we visited. Beers are creative and dark beers so delicious. And the food is to die for. Last evening Steak Po-Boy is simply the best we have ever had! Absolutely gourmet food in this brewery. We consider this as our dinner place and not just a brewery. This is THE must visit brewery for all our visitors. The venue is casual with quirky spots and many different hangout areas. We have huddled with friends in the winter months under shelter, enjoy music in the lower zone, hang out in the rooftop areas or just in the many tables around. We like the sister Forestry Camp too."

Grace Sadosky

"Really enjoyed stopping by for a few beers and dinner based on other reviews. All of the beers I tried were excellent, especially their imperial IPA and the stouts (the names are extremely long and entertaining). Food was good as well. Absolutely massive space, multiple levels outdoors in the front and back. It was cold and rainy, but we ate outside in a covered area that had enough heaters to actually make it warmer than the indoors area. Service was fast and friendly. Even though it's thematically dark with the names and decor, it's extremely laid back and kid/dog friendly. I can't speak to any other Asheville breweries, but this one is worth a visit."

chris lietz

"Visited a few times while in Asheville. They have a wide variety of beers to choose from and a small kitchen serving burgers and other tasty food. Always a good stop when in town."

Why Asheville should be at the top of your travel list right now

All of the cult favorites in Asheville, like Wicked Weed, Burial, and Green Man, have plenty of outdoor tables, and many of them allows kids, making them perfect for families. I spent a lovely couple of hours at New Belgium Brewery, which has one of the largest properties in Asheville, with a deck overlooking the French Broad River and a large field for romping children and dogs. Another favorite is Wedge Brewing Company, which has two locations in Asheville, both of which have ample outdoor seating.

Best Breweries in Asheville: Where to Drink Craft Beer Right Now

South Slope, Biltmore VillageOf all the breweries clustered throughout the former industrial South Slope district, Burial may be the most renowned. The original taproom and kitchen continue to pour a dizzying range of one-off brews, most with delightfully morbid names (Deathstalker, A Fall From Grace, A Cruel World Nevertheless). There’s lots of al fresco imbibing around here, as patio tables and gardens flank the building on three sides.

Burial is one of the most respected breweries in town, and many locals will point to it as their favorite brewery. The reason why is because Burial has never lost touch with their roots as downtown’s first nano-brewery when it operated on a one-barrel system. The taps are constantly changing with seasonals and specials series like their Skillet series (think donut flavors) and Double IPA series, which included 17 releases.

The 5 Breweries You Must Visit in Asheville, NC

What started as a fledgling one-barrel brewery in a dilapidated South Slope warehouse has now evolved into one of Asheville’s most impressive and forward-thinking breweries. After just a year in business, Seattle transplants Jess and Doug Reiser, along with brewer Tim Gormley, expanded to a 10-barrel brewhouse and extended their hours to six days a week, serving beers that lean heavy toward Belgian traditions—farmhouse saisons, crisp blonde ales, and intense dubbels—while incorporating local ingredients like wildflower honey and North Carolina sweet potatoes. Be sure to ask about Burial’s special bottle releases, many of which are made in collaboration with other local breweries like Asheville Brewing, Oskar Blues, Pisgah, and Hi-Wire.

The 17 Best Breweries In Asheville, North Carolina

Burial’s calling card is truly intricate, well-crafted beers that have grown in popularity so quickly that the team at Burial has continually grown in their first few years. From their original location in South Slope, they expanded to their Forestry Camp location, a cool spot that used to be a literal forestry camp and was renovated to become Burial’s larger production facility, a restaurant, a barrel-aging facility, and a winery. They’ve got big plans that will continue their expansion, but why not stop by the Forestry Camp location and try one of the best breweries in Asheville with food?

Slightly newer breweries, opening a few years after the original four, like Pisgah, The Wedge, Hi-Wire, and Burial have earned a place in the hearts of locals and deserve recognition. Wicked Weed was a crowd favorite when they first opened, but have recently encountered controversy and fallen out of favor with some of the locals after the business was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev earlier this year. Their beer is still fantastic and they’ve opened a place called the Funkatorium which specializes in sour and funky barrel-aged beers, which is worth seeking out if you enjoy those styles.
