Reviews Summary

Cúrate Bar de Tapas is celebrated for its authentic Spanish tapas and exceptional hospitality, consistently delighting diners with unique local ingredients and flavorful dishes. While most reviews rave about the culinary experience and attentive service, a few patrons have found certain dishes to be underwhelming or bland for the price point.

"We were referred to Curate and we are so glad we made the decision to dine there! This is a very popular restaurant and I noticed that when we made our reservation online via Resy. Be sure to plan ahead to secure at table. When we arrived, there was a line outside so we stepped inside about 7:55pm to check in for our 8:30pm seating and were delighted to be seated within minutes. Our server was Melissa and was fantastic. She was a local and was able to explain the dishes made with unique local ingredients. She was also well versed in the Spanish wine offerings and made pairing suggestions. The food was delicious! They offer tapas style small plates as well as full size plates. If you enjoy fish, the Trout dish is a must. Mushroom dishes were divine. Ask about the freshly made ice cream. We chose Rosemary ice cream. Enjoy!"

Lori Clinton

"I am probably just echoing the masses here, but wow! Every dish was exceptional! Portion sizes are very large. The two of us split 5 and couldn’t finish it all. The bread with tomato and add on manchego was the peak of simple perfection. The eggplant with honey was a delightful surprise of sweet and crispy that could almost pass for dessert. But make no mistake, the cheesecake will be the most amazing discovery. Insanely creamy with a hint of caramel from the edges and tang from the goat cheese, it is hands down the best you will ever have. It is perfect for people who don’t like overly sweet or cloying things at the end of a meal. Our server was knowledgeable and excited to share info about each course. It is a true education in tapas. You will leave very full and so happy. It is worth it!"

Emily Dotson

"We had such a wonderful experience at Cúrate for our anniversary! Everything we ate was absolutely delicious—from the salad with shrimp, to the lamb skewers, pork, and sautéed shrimp, every dish was full of flavor and beautifully prepared.

The staff went above and beyond to make our evening special, even surprising us with a complimentary dessert for our anniversary, which was the perfect sweet ending to an amazing meal.

If you’re in Asheville and want an unforgettable dining experience with incredible food and outstanding service, I highly recommend Cúrate!"

Things to Do in Asheville, NC: How to Help Hurricane Recovery

Chefs like Katie Button of Cúrate, Meherwan Irani of Chai Pani, and William Dissen of The Market Place have established Asheville as a culinary destination, blending regional traditions with inventive flavors. Asheville’s farm-to-table movement began long before the concept was trendy, with Mark Rosenstein opening The Market Place in 1979 as one of the pioneers. In 2009, chef William Dissen took over the restaurant, maintaining the ethos of working with local purveyors—and the restaurant was nominated for a James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurant this year, its 45th year in business.

Curate is often credited with placing Asheville on America’s dining map. Stepping into acclaimed chef Katie Button’s restaurant — with its vermouth bar and charcuterie station — is like stepping into a family restaurant in a small Spanish town. Button and husband Felix Meana — with mentoring from the likes of José Andrés and Ferran Adria — serve cochinillo (roasted suckling pig), traditional paellas and a killer selection of papa el aperitivo (snacks) like latas (premium Spanish tin seafood), montaditos (small bites on toast points) and gilda (anchovy, olive and piparra pinchos).

Chef Katie Button is the engine behind Cúrate, a Spanish tapas restaurant inside a stylishly redone 1920s bus depot that received the James Beard Foundation Award for Outstanding Hospitality in 2022. Born in South Carolina and raised in New Jersey, Button draws inspiration from her family’s Southern roots, her experience working with José Andrés in D.C., and her time spent at world-renowned El Bulli in Spain. After 14 years in Asheville, Button believes a dish’s uniqueness is what elevates it.

"We wanted to do what we do, but better," says Button, of the space featuring a tap wall of vermouth, sherry, red sangria and cider, as well as a Jamoneria station. For a proper vermouth experience, Button suggests ordering exactly this: the gilda (anchovy, olive and piparra) to start, pan de cristal con tomate (tomato bread that will forever linger in your imagination), a selection of cured Spanish ham that will melt in your mouth and cockles with Bonilla à la Vista potato chips from Spain and obviously a vermouth beverage.

Jamón ibérico—ham from acorn-fattened Spanish Ibérico pigs—is one of the shining stars of executive chef Katie Button’s menu, but perennial favorites like the berenjenas con miel (fried eggplant drizzled in local and garnished with rosemary), patatas bravas (crispy fried potatoes with tomato and garlic sauce), and the sea-essenced rossejat (paella-style noodles with squid, squid ink, shellfish stock, garlic, and salsa verde) are also exceptional.

The tapas bar that launched the mini Spanish empire in town is helmed by James Beard-nominated chef Katie Buttons and her husband Felix Meana, whose bright, bustling space in a 1920s bus depot on the main drag remains a hot ticket more than a decade after its debut. A great place to bring friends for Spanish favorites — jamon, patatas bravas, and setas washed down with a great selection of vermouths — the seasonal menu is reliably unexpected, exciting, punchy, and very shareable. The 18 Best Gluten-Free Restaurants In Asheville

Tapas-style eating can be a great fit if you prefer to eat less or almost no gluten. While wheat-based bread is definitely popular in Spain, many of the traditional tapas, or small plates, offered at Asheville’s Cúrate restaurant are designated as gluten-free because there is simply no wheat or bread product included. Spanish cuisine places a premium on fresh ingredients, and while they are seasoned, many of the dishes let the high-quality produce, meat, or fish play the primary role: sample pimientos de piquillo relleno, savory peppers stuffed with goat cheese, or vieiras, a dish of delicious scallops with charred leeks and confit potatoes to round out the flavors.

In a repurposed 1920s bus depot in the heart of downtown Asheville, Curate dishes up small-plate tapas fare to a loyal following of locals who grab a stool at the bar or settle in for group dinners on velvet banquettes in the narrow dining room. Essential orders include the delicately spiced patatas bravas (crispy potatoes) and jamon iberico (cured ham), plus the whole grilled trout and shareable suckling pig. Pastry chef Carmen Vaquera gets creative with desserts, serving a merengue de “gin & tonic” (gin-soaked berries with torched meringue and tonic snow) and a flan de huevo (orange-saffron flan served with caramel and sherry-poached raisins).

This sprawling tapas bar located in the thick of things in Asheville is hard to miss, thanks to the buzz around the door for hard-to-snag reservations. The clambering is thanks to upscale Spanish plates crafted under the leadership of entrepreneur and chef Katie Button, such as skewers of anchovies, olives and Spanish piparra peppers, or bits of eggplant, fried and sweetened, that taste like funnel cake. The waitstaff helps pair dishes with sparkling sangrias and hard-to-find sherries from Andalusia, leading the restaurant to win the coveted outstanding hospitality prize at the James Beard Awards last year.

The long dual-language menu overwhelms at first, but take your time and order as you go. The berenjenas la taberna (fried eggplant with honey and rosemary) makes a great starter, and don’t miss the esqueixada de montaña (raw trout served on a bed of tomato with lemon vinaigrette). Save room for dessert — the espuma de chocolate (chocolate mousse, raspberry sorbet and hazelnut praline) is worth every calorie.
