Reviews Summary

Sovereign Remedies is lauded for its creative, craft cocktails and cozy, vintage atmosphere, often described as romantic and intimate. While many praise the attentive and knowledgeable staff, a few reviews mention inconsistencies in food quality and pricing. The bar is a popular spot for both locals and visitors seeking a unique downtown experience.

"Stopped into Sovereign Remedies to wait out a summer rainstorm and ended up having a great time. We enjoyed a few well-crafted cocktails and appreciated the variety of seating options—from cozy couches to bar stools and corner tables. There’s even an upstairs dining area for a more elevated experience.

It’s a charming spot on the corner, perfect for a midday hang with friends or a casual date. The atmosphere is both laid-back and stylish, and the staff was welcoming. Definitely a great place to unwind in downtown Asheville.

"My favorite part of this restaurant was the location, the large windows, and the cozy sitting area upstairs. The bathroom needs cleaning and updating. The food on the menu was not the same on line, so we were taking back with what was available. The fries were nothing special. The trout was OK but not worth the price. Our waitress constantly wanted to take our plate away before we were done. I saw her doing the same at another table. They were grabbing the last morsel as she was taking away the plate. She needs to be retrained. I was also disappointed at the cocktail that I received. It didn't have a balanced flavor. My boyfriend's drink was better and had a floating butterfly, which was a nice presentation. For a place that specializes in cocktails, it was very disappointing. Based on other reviews, maybe if we were sitting at the bar, we would get better drinks."

"Sovereign has been one of my long time favorites as an Asheville local. The location really cannot be beat if you want to be downtown- from holidays to late nights to popping in for the odd drink while walking around. The drinks and service are great. The aesthetic/ atmosphere is Romantic as in you'd expect to see Keats and Shelley writing poetry at the bar. Like if your literature professor was actually an immortal nature spirit (fae academia?). I promise that will make sense if you go 😂 I am so happy that some of the former staff were able to buy it and kept it from closing. They've made a lot of great renovations already- from menu to facilities. You can tell the new team has put a lot of attention and love into the details. If you aren't sure what you like, Margaret will be an amazing guide- asking what flavors you like to help choose a drink, etc. Regardless, she cracks me up and all the new owners/ staff are really lovely. Ask them for Asheville recommendations if you're new to town!"

This upscale bar consistently earns top marks for its craft cocktails and chic atmosphere and has a dogged commitment to sourcing its ingredients locally. As a result, Sovereign Remedies’ cocktail menu changes several times a month and often includes unexpected ingredients and flavors, like local flora or other wild edibles. A large selection of bottles lines one cathedral-ceiling wall and gives a grandness to the narrow space.

About Asheville

The 15 Best Restaurants In Asheville For A Date Night Out

The historic Market Street building was ripe for creating a romantic new restaurant in 2014, when Sovereign Remedies opened. The seven-story building was once a spot for doctors, dentists, a drug store, and a barbershop. The ultra-high ceilings made it a perfect spot to add lush plants in the windows, and the name refers to a kind of family-specific medicinal herb mixture that was common in the Appalachian mountains when more mainstream formulations of medicine weren’t easy to come by.

Sovereign Remedies takes the idea of the craft cocktail one step further; they focus on how their drinks can relate to nature and also how they can benefit you by drinking them. Sourcing primarily from their own farm and also their next door herbiery, Sovereign works to bring the community tasty beverages that are satisfying not only to the taste buds, but also to the body. We love the old-school apothecary feel that this bar exudes, along with the friendly and knowledgeable staff.
