Wicked Weed Brewing's Brewpub

Sour beer enthusiasts should stop at Wicked Weed Brewing’s Funkatorium, for a set flight. (Do pay a visit to the restroom, too, which entails wandering through the aging room, currently stacked floor to ceiling with more than 600 barrels.) Elsewhere in the South Slope Brewery District, just south of downtown, is the popular Burial Beer Co., O.G. Green Man, and the year-old Tasty Beverage Co., the ultimate bottle shop destination for craft enthusiasts. Whole aisles are devoted to Asheville and North Carolina labels, plus new and seasonal brews.

All of the cult favorites in Asheville, like Wicked Weed, Burial, and Green Man, have plenty of outdoor tables, and many of them allows kids, making them perfect for families. I spent a lovely couple of hours at New Belgium Brewery, which has one of the largest properties in Asheville, with a deck overlooking the French Broad River and a large field for romping children and dogs. Another favorite is Wedge Brewing Company, which has two locations in Asheville, both of which have ample outdoor seating.

Wicked Weed is probably most famous for its Funkatorium location. (Yes, you read that correctly.) While the original brewpub is located downtown, the Funkatorium in the South Slope Brewery District is dedicated to the company's sours and "funkier" brews for beer lovers with a more adventurous palate. Wicked Weed's other property, Cultura, right next door to the Funkatorium, is an elevated brewpub with "new-agrarian cuisine," sour beer, wine, and cocktails.

Henry VIII called hops ‘a wicked and pernicious weed’ that ruined the taste of beer. His subjects kept quaffing it anyway – just like the lively crowd in this former gas station, which overflows with hoppy brews....

Start your visit in Asheville off right with a bison burger paired with a pint of top-notch craft beer at Wicked Weed Brewing. Don’t be surprised by the strong smell of wort when you walk into the main-floor restaurant; brothers Luke and Walt Dickinson are constantly experimenting with fermentation downstairs, and the aroma, they say, is part of the memorable experience. In 2013, they created a record-busting 104 beers, one of which, called Serenity, took a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival. A mural of King Henry VIII, who famously declared hops a “wicked and pernicious weed,” greets more than 1,000 drinkers and diners a day, so it’s best to arrive for a late lunch to get your pick of indoor, outdoor, upstairs or downstairs seating.

One of the most iconic breweries on Biltmore Ave, Wicked Weed was a big part of the launch of Asheville’s beer city moniker and consistently ranks as one of the top breweries in Asheville. From their Coastal Love Hazy IPA to their Milk and Cookies Imperial Stout, they’ve specialized in a variety of IPAs but offer variety so that every beer lover comes happy and leaves happy. Their locations also are connected to restaurants: the original location has a bunch of great sandwiches and smoked meats (also try the kale salad!), and Cultura, connected to the funky-beer Funkatorium, is a fine-dining concept that focuses on cultured foods and all the ways that people preserve food around the world.

In what was one of the biggest national beer news stories of the past several years, Belgian-owned AB InBev purchased Asheville’s Wicked Weed Brewing in 2017. Then, in 2019, one of the U.S.’s largest independent craft breweries, New Belgium Brewing, sold 100 percent of its company, including the Asheville facility, to Lion, an Australian-based subsidiary of Japan’s Kirin. In late 2021, Burke County’s first brewery, Catawba Valley Brewing, sold its portfolio of brands to Made by the Water LLC. Earlier this year, soft drink company Monster Beverage purchased the CANarchy family of breweries, including Oskar Blues Brewery, whose east coast production facility opened in Brevard in 2012.

EM: One of Asheville’s most popular breweries also happens to be an inclusive space where the LGBTQ+ community is not only accepted but welcomed with open arms. (The gay flag waves at the entrance and is just one of their visible signs of support for the queer community. Be sure to check out their newest mural in the Biergarten which depicts revolutionary trans activist Marcia P. Johnson.) Beyond the symbolism, Wicked Weed also holds a Pridetoberfest at their Pub and Funkatorium (the east coast’s first sour beer dedicated taproom) and they also brew a beer where a portion of the proceeds go to the Campaign for Southern Equality as well as Blue Ridge Pride.

As I wrote at the beginning of this piece, I don’t personally visit Wicked Weed locations when I’m in Asheville these days, largely choosing not to give business to AB InBev-owned breweries. But at the same time, we should acknowledge that Wicked Weed was instrumental in raising the profile of Asheville beer, along with the prevalence of American wild ales, in the front half of the 2010s in particular. They were long stars of Paste blind beer tastings, particularly with fruited wild ales that pushed the limits of how much tart, fruity flavor one could cram into a 500 ml bottle.

A two-storied restaurant and brewery, Wicked Weed Brewing is one of the newest craft breweries on the local beer scene but a huge selection of delicious brews has quickly catapulted it onto the list of area favorites. From barrel-aged ales to hoppy American lagers, this brewpub cranks out a varied selection of craft beers designed to pair well with its menu of local-sourced fare. Its close proximity to The Orange Peel next door makes it a great pre- and post-show spot plus the expansive outdoor patio with its blazing fire pit at the center makes it a popular evening haunt.

Since opening its first taproom in 2012, the brewery has expanded with two more taprooms, as well as a fine dining restaurant called Cultura, all located in the city. And though the brand has flourished over the past decade, with several flagships distributed across the country and a high-profile buyout by Anheuser Busch in 2017, Wicked Weed will always be quintessential Asheville. Their Funkatorium location, which specializes in sour and funky fermented brews, is often a first stop for those looking to complete their Asheville brewery bucket list.

But alas, a brewery tour means that you have to move on, so move on we did – to Wicked Weed. And while Wicked Weed has been owned by AB InBev for many years now, making them no longer an official craft brewery, they have still managed to hold onto their roots by continuing their traditions of crafting unique beers. With four locations in the Asheville area, including their well-known Funkatorium, a taproom dedicated to their sour beer program, Wicked Weed isn’t going anywhere soon, and that’s good for all beer lovers.

Many, such as Wicked Weed, Sierra Nevada, New Belgium (the latter two have their Eastern U.S. headquarters here) and Lexington Avenue Brewery, have good food, too. Or, if you’re interested in architecture you could do an architecture day. Asheville has the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the Southeast outside of Miami. If you’re interested in art and local crafts, Asheville has around 50 art and crafts galleries, mainly Downtown, in the River Arts District and in Biltmore Village.

We walked the remainder of the day, with our next stop in the form of an early liquid lunch at one of Asheville’s many craft breweries, Wicked Weed Brewing. Asheville has nearly 20 different places brewing beer, and the Wicked Weed brewpub is one of the city’s most popular, offering a number of barrel-aged beers and sours. A couple of blocks away we were treated to a couple of flavor bombs from White Duck Taco Shop.

We ended up going to Wicked Weed and enjoyed a beer on the patio (dogs are not allowed inside and only in certain parts of the outdoor space as they serve a full menu) and then to Burial Beer Co. Dogs can hang out inside and you can get a full feel for their eclectic life and death theme.

Wicked Weed Funkatorium: if you want to try funky beers, this is your place. I’m a sour beer gal and they have flights specific to your taste. The sour flight was my jam (specifically the watermelon basil sour), but they have a whole bunch to chose from along with a full menu.

It’s a cool place, but when we went one night it was so packed that it was really hard to get a drink and I think it was a little too noisy and crowded for Lucy. We did meet a group of really nice people I talked to for a while, but this place was hard to hang out at solo!

Wicked Weed Funkatorium – Wicked Weed’s second location is dedicated to funky and sour beers, which are my favorite kind. Unfortunately, since the Anheuser-Busch acquisition, in my opinion, the taproom experience has declined. However, the quality of the beer has not.

Wicked Weed put Asheville on the map as a sour beer destination. It was all the hype when I was growing up and was one of the few craft breweries in Asheville at the time. Now, Wicked Weed has been bought out by Anheuser-Busch, but not much has changed.

Besides Wicked Weed Brewing Pub and sister sour beer specialist Wicked Weed Funkatorium, Burial Beer Co. (which has sister venues in Raleigh and Charlotte) features a super tasty menu with bites, barbecue, burgers, sammies, and vegan/vegetarian options.

Wicked Weed: There is no shortage of breweries in Asheville. There IS a shortage of breweries with delicious food, but don’t worry, Wicked Weed has got you covered on that front. David and I visited Wicked Weed on a romantic weekend trip last year.

Wicked Weed is one of the busier breweries in downtown Asheville. It has more of a restaurant feel to it, but in such is pretty kid-friendly. They have high-chairs for littles, and crayons and coloring books.
