Upon glancing at their selection of libations, you’ll come across everything from the Nola-approved Bon Ton Hurricane to the Frozen Vietnamese Irish coffee (a caffeinated sip made with plenty of Jameson).

This 80-seat restaurant on a Midtown side street isn't serious about anything other than having a good time. It feels like a '70s throwback with wood-paneled walls, shag carpeting, and light fixtures from yesteryear. The seafood menu combines New Orleans Cajun influences with Vietnamese inflections, with everything from boiled peanuts and poutine to start to a Vietnamese banh mi omelette and crab cake toast.

When you see the lilac building, you’ll know you’re in the right place. Inside, say hello to the giant neon sign that reads “Fancy Service,” and settle into the eccentric atmosphere. Bon Ton is perfect for a night on the town—starting or capping off the evening with a round of fun cocktails—or digging into Cajun-style food with Vietnamese flair.

You can’t miss the building—it’s pink—and you won’t soon forget the joyful Viet-Cajun food, either. Of particular note: blackened catfish that you can get in a banh mi or over a rice bowl with pickled veg and crispy shallots, boiled seafood by the pound, spicy jicama and papaya salad, and a Nashville hot po’boy with your choice of filling (a fried-oyster option will convert even the most recalcitrant fried-oyster skeptic). A late-night stop for local industry folks, Bon Ton is as much a drinking place as it is an eating place, so don’t skip the hurricanes—or bartender Baylee Hopings’s more adventuresome flights of fancy—either.

The drink menu at Bon Ton includes both impeccable takes on New Orleans classics, and more Bourbon Street-reminiscent party fare like Hurricanes, plus whimsical riffs on tropical and tiki staples like the smoked bourbon mai tai. This is a bar with an energetic vibe that carries on into the wee hours – to that end, should you need a late-night pick-me-up, their frozen Vietnamese Irish coffee made with condensed milk will do the trick.

There are some cocktail bars you just have to experience to “get it,” and Bon Ton is one of those places. You can’t put the Midtown all-year Mardi Gras destination in a box as it slings superb seafood with Vietnamese flair accompanied by flawless French Quarter cocktails. Get caught up in New Orleans classics like the rum-forward BonTon Hurricane, Sazerac and a devout walk down the tiki path in the smoked bourbon mai tai.

I don’t know if I have one restaurant newcomer to watch per se, but there are still a few places that I’d like to try out such as Talat Market, Masterpiece (touted as the best Chinese in Atlanta), Spring, and Bon Ton. CK: I’m always on the lookout for something to enter my normal rotation, but it’s truly hard to find. Lately it feels like all the new restaurants are a little too trendy or expensive to actually go often.

Bon Ton in Midtown has a lunch special that would make New Orleans proud!. The lunch special I tried was a 1/2 shrimp po boy, Zapp’s chips and a soda for $10.
