What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Odd Duck consistently earns rave reviews for its inventive, locally sourced New American cuisine and exceptional service. Diners praise the creative small plates designed for sharing, with many calling it one of the best restaurants in Austin. While the menu changes frequently, standout items like the cornbread and the flexibility for dietary needs are frequently highlighted.
"When I first saw the menu, it seemed like there was a lot going on and a lot of interesting ingredient combinations. But once I tasted the food, it quickly became apparent how well considered each of the dishes were how much in harmony all the flavors were. Very much enjoyed it all. I think my only heads up to first timers is that each entry on the menu isn’t sufficient enough to be a meal on its own. The restaurant is designed as sort of a make-your-own-tasting menu where everything is brought out in courses and meant to share. We were recommended 4-5 courses for a party of 2 and that was about right to make meal. I don’t think this is a bad thing, just not quite what I expected, so know that going in and you’ll have a great time. Vibe is good, staff is good."

"If I could give 10 stars I would. We had a 6pm reservation. Liked arriving early, it was very quiet until about 7:15/30 when it really started to fill up. Service was incredible from start to finish. Robert, our server, was the best! He was super knowledgeable, made great suggestions and was very attentive. We had 4 in our party, husband and 2 kids, 19 and 21. We all agreed it was one of our top 3 dinners, ever! Photo of what we ordered in the pics, just duplicate ours, you won’t be disappointed! We LOVED the celery sorbet sundae, sort of had to be talked into it by Robert but he was right!! Really every dish was perfection hard to pick out a favorite, pressed I’d pick cornbread, honeydew salad, and the pasta! Amazing flavors and the right portion size. If we lived here I would want to come back weekly!"

"A standout experience from start to finish.
Odd Duck totally lives up to the hype. Every dish felt creative but grounded. Using local ingredients, bold flavors, and the taste of every dish was insane.
The small plates are perfect for sharing (or not), and the cocktail list is just as impressive.
Our server/bartender, Joe, was so lovely and incredibly knowledgeable and helped us navigate the menu. The vibe is warm, lively, and very Austin. Highly recommend if you’re into seasonal food done really, really well.
Great veggie options- and Joe took time to explain the dishes. Plus there’s a separate veggie menu which was great."

Best fine-dining restaurants in Austin for a special occasion
From its 2009 food trailer origins to a primarily glass-walled brick and mortar location at the same site (opened in 2013), brother-chefs Bryce and Dylan Gilmore—along with partners Sam Hellman-Mass, Mark Buley and Jason James—have established one of the most popular South Lamar spots for gourmet brunch, lunch and dinner. While the sources of their fixings remain consistent—only local farmers, a keystone of their mission since the trailer days—the menus at Odd Duck change daily depending on seasonally available ingredients, which means each visit has the potential to yield a wholly different experience. In other words, you’ll want to go back more than once (read: all the damn time).
Restaurants in Austin
This food truck turned brick-and-mortar was an early trailblazer of the city’s farm-to-table movement, thanks to chef Bryce Gilmore’s inventive take on locally sourced, modern American cuisine. Gilmore and his team’s artistic approach to Southern seasonal fare comes in tapas-sized portions, so servers recommend a few dishes per patron. All the better to sample their variety of rotating dishes, from c harred eggplant baba ghanoush and fried whole quail with peaches and squash puree to buckwheat crumpets and beer-battered sweet potatoes.
The 25 Best Restaurants In Austin - Austin
It’s wood smoke, fire, chiles, game, and Gulf Coast seafood, with a menu that riffs on classic Texan dishes like tamales, cornbread, green chili pork shoulder, or icebox cake. The menu at this upbeat, semi-casual South Lamar restaurant menu gets revamped at a rapid-fire pace. From day to day, week to week, every dish is subject to change, either because of seasonality (hell, they even have their own farm), the chefs’ whims, or how the wind’s blowing.
The Best Restaurants For Lunch In Austin Texas
With a menu inspired by the Texas seasons, you can’t go wrong at Odd Duck. This local restaurant on South Lamar serves their signature Pig Face Rolls, which is exactly as advertised – with a surprisingly flavorful twist. Try the classic southern fried chicken with pickled green beans, and on hot summer days enjoy fresh watermelon with a side of hummus.
20 Best Austin Restaurants
There are several great farm-to-table restaurants in Austin that I could recommend to you, but Odd Duck was at the forefront of the movement, operating out of a little food truck in 2009 that only served food made from ingredients from local farmers. The gorgeous brick-and-mortar rendition of Odd Duck opened with a bang in 2013, and it’s still one of Austin’s favorite places to enjoy small plates of locally sourced ingredients. They serve the food on mismatched vintage flatware, and this is one of my favorite dinner and brunch restaurants in the whole city.
The 25 Best Restaurants in Austin
Regarding his menu, chef-partner Bryce Gilmore likes to say: “Everything has the potential to change.” Yet, that’s a mighty big understatement from the James Beard Award nominee, whose culinary attention span is like a cat chasing a laser pointer. Because of his close working relationship with local farmers and purveyors, today’s charred eggplant baba ganoush might be tomorrow’s fried squash blossom with almond ricotta. This is “seasonal” on speed, as Gilmore forges wildly innovative dishes with a distinct Texas twang.
Austin, Texas Fine-Dining Restaurants: Best Michelin-Worthy Restaurants
Located on South Lamar, Odd Duck has mastered the art of New American cuisine, specializing in quirky and creative combinations that Michelin tends to gravitate toward. Local sourcing is a huge priority at Odd Duck, so you’ll find that the menu changes pretty regularly based on what’s available. Where to Eat in Austin, Texas Now
Odd Duck – When I first moved back to Austin eight years ago, I always read about Bryce Gilmore and his restaurants, Barley Swine and Odd Duck, because those were the places to be, but I would look at the menu and just didn’t “get it” until I finally went and understood. It turns out that all the flavors in your mouth come together to create a culinary adventure that doesn’t always exist at other restaurants. Everything is playful and unique and very farm-to-table.

Odd Duck takes the terms "locally-focused" and "farm-to-table," but keeps them completely approachable and comforting. Like many of Austin’s most beloved food spots, it started as a trailer, but has since transformed into a sit-down space that doles out upscale takes on Southern-inspired dishes. The menu changes constantly, but expect items like cast-iron cheddar cornbread, stuffed quail with braised greens, and modern takes on old-school icebox cake.
