What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Diners consistently praise The Helmand for its authentic and flavorful Afghan cuisine, with many highlighting dishes like the Kaddo Borwani and various lamb preparations. The elegant ambiance and attentive service also receive high marks, making it a strong choice for special occasions. However, some reviews mention that the food quality and authenticity may have declined from its peak, with specific criticisms regarding portion sizes and traditional preparation methods.
"Really great food. Tender cooked meats in delicious savory sauces. The dining room is nice. It is a really busy place and fills up quickly, so reservations are best. The Turkish coffee was really good. My only complaint (and i know this sounds strange), but the food came out too quickly. We ordered an appetizer, and it came out 2 minutes later. We ordered dinner, and it came out in 5 min. I just wanted to sit and chat with my friends for a few minutes and enjoy the ambiance. Overall, it was a great experience and I will go again."

"I had never had Afghanistan dishes before. This restaurant exceeded my expectations! I had the chicken Lawand and wow! The flavors were so delicious. Alfredo did an excellent job taking care of us. I would definitely come back again and again."

"⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.3/5 stars
We visited The Helmand on a Thursday night and were surprised to find it almost completely empty. Just two other diners were in the entire restaurant, which gave it a strange, somewhat lifeless vibe for a place that gets so much hype online.
The decor feels a bit outdated, and honestly, they could probably use some marketing help to get more people through the door. It really didn’t feel like a spot that’s supposed to be one of Baltimore’s most famous Afghan restaurants.
That said, the service was excellent. The servers were super attentive, always checking on us and refilling our water without us having to ask. They were polite and knowledgeable about the menu.
The food itself was… fine. A lot of the menu revolves around lamb, which was cooked well enough but didn’t blow us away. Flavors were decent, but nothing stood out as particularly memorable. It’s the sort of meal where you finish full and satisfied but not raving about it afterward.
We didn’t try any of the wine or coffee, so can’t comment on those, but the prices were fair for the amount of food we got.
Overall, it was a solid experience, but I’m just not sure it deserves the level of hype it gets online. Tasty, but not amazing. If you’re curious about Afghan food or just want something different, it’s worth trying at least once, but don’t go in expecting to be completely wowed."

The 22 Best Restaurants In Baltimore - Baltimore
The way The Helmand, an Afghan spot in Mount Vernon, squeezes so much flavor into their dishes should be studied by a special task force (and one that we’d like to be a part of). See this phenomenon for yourself by ordering the leek aushak dumplings with yogurt and mint, tender pumpkin kaddo borwani in garlic and yogurt, and the onion-beef mantwo swimming in meat sauce. The restaurant is located in a 100-year-old carriage house that works for a first date, or a special occasion meal after a visit to the Walters Art Museum, when everybody wants their own big plate of rice and meat.
The Top Vegetarian And Vegan Restaurants In Baltimore
If you are not familiar with Afghan cuisine, you might not know that they have a fantastic variety of vegetarian dishes, and the classic Baltimore restaurant Helmand is no exception. Start with one of the appetizers; the “ kaddoo borwani” (baked baby pumpkin) or the “ bowlawni” (pan-fried pastry filled with leeks and potatoes) are both great options. Choose from one of their many vegetarian entrées, including the “ Aushak,” which are Afghan-style ravioli, and the stuffed bell pepper—you really can’t go wrong!

Baltimore’s Best Restaurants, 2025
Not much has changed at this Mount Vernon institution in the more than 30 years that it has anchored the Baltimore dining scene—the white-tablecloth tables, the traditional Afghan dresses on the walls, the seamless service, or the mainstay menu, centered around classic Afghan dishes. Even after longtime owner Qayum Karzai passed away last summer, The Helmand continued its mission of bringing Baltimoreans plates of lamb, apricots, and turnips; beef-topped ravioli; and kaddow borwani, the pumpkin in yogurt sauce that’s long been a must-order. Though the patriach’s presence is missed, few things are better than sharing a meal here with a table full of friends and family, then finishing the evening with a double shot of Turkish coffee and a plate of the house-made baklava.

This Afghani bistro in Mt. Among the fare receiving nationwide acclaim is its signature appetizer, kaddo borwani (pictured), which its menu describes as a "tenderly baked and pan-fried baby pumpkin seasoned with sugar and served atop a yogurt garlic sauce".
