If it’s a glorious day out, you should get at least one meal to go and eat it in the great outdoors (or at least on some grass). Downeast Deli only does takeout, so grab a giant Italian sandwich and put it into your hiking backpack to share on a trail or at the top of a postcard-like vista. Sandwiches are piled high with sliced deli meat—we love the salami, mortadella, ham, and capicola situation—and they also have stuffed baked potatoes that can serve as makeshift hand-warmers when you forget to pack layers for a whale-watching cruise.

Don't be fooled by this tiny takeout-only joint's no-frills storefront: many praise its lobster rolls as the best around. On summer mornings, the line often stretches around the corner by 10 am as folks come to get lobster rolls as well as wraps, sandwiches, salads, and slices of blueberry pie for outings to Acadia National Park and elsewhere around Mount Desert Island. You can also pick up items for dinner after a day of exploring.

And now we delve into the seasonal establishments… Downeast Deli is the “home of the naked lobster roll,” which means you can get your meat “undressed” (without mayo). But there are other options, as well: Classic (a little bit of mayo), Hot (warm meat with drizzled butter), and Hot Tarragon (warm meat with tarragon mayo). On the first visit, we bought lunch to take on the schooner with us. We went back the next year and got the same lunch for a picnic in Agamont Park, a lovely and busy green that slopes down toward the harbor. Tween Traveler ordered a baked potato with her choice of fixin’s (her choice was butter and bacon – sigh).

If you would rather pack a picnic lunch for your day in the park, stop at one of the few grocery stores downtown or grab a sandwich from a casual shop like Downeast Deli and Boxed Lunch Co. Keep in mind many Bar Harbor restaurants operate seasonally, so be sure to check the hours and closures before you go.
