Yes, this is the place where President Obama got his scoop of coconut ice cream lo those many years ago, but Mt. Desert Island Ice Cream (7 Firefly Lane) has a reputation beyond being the presidential purveyor of frozen treats. There are more tourist-friendly ice cream shops in the vicinity, and if lobster ice cream is your thing, then by all means, head over there, closer to the wharf. But if you’re a fan of Bi-Rite, Humphry Slocombe, Il Laboratorio del Gelato, or Jeni’s, then this is where you need to be.

This is what all of Mount Desert’s best restaurants – including Red Sky, Havana, Café This Way, and Fathom – choose to pair with their homemade puddings and blueberry pies. They had tons of really interesting flavors to sample, but I ended up choosing Maine Salted Caramel (their most popular flavor) and 7 Layer (an ice cream version of my favorite bar cookie with coconut, graham crackers, chocolate chips and butterscotch chips). So good, and apparently devoured so fast that there is no photographic evidence to show for it!

We came here pretty late right before they were closing, so they were sold out of a lot of the flavors. We did still pick some flavors that sounded yummy and enjoyed our scoops.

There are tons of great places to get ice cream in Bar Harbor, but our favorite is Mount Desert Island (MDI) Ice Cream on Main Street. This is where the Obama family went for ice cream when they visited Bar Harbor a few years back. So if it’s good enough for the President…

I had never cracked open a lobster, but when in Maine am I right?. It’s super messy, and I don’t loveee lobster like some people do, so I don’t think I need to eat it like this again. That being said, it was indeed the best lobster I had during the trip.

If you have a sweet tooth and you’ve already been to Morning Glory, try MDI Ice Cream, offering two locations in Bar Harbor with a unique assortment of flavors. Out of the choices, I recommend a waffle cone with Nutella ice cream and chocolate sprinkles.

You'll find ice cream widely available, but treat yourself to locally made Mount Desert Island Ice Cream, which is renowned for its small-batch production using fresh ingredients and inventive flavors such as butterscotch miso and salt wildflower honey.

This insanely creamy ice cream is made five batches at a time with premium ingredients, and boy is it obvious. Mount Desert Ice Cream truly has some of the best ice cream I've ever had!. We went there twice in one weekend and I miss it like crazy.

On a related note, many people strongly recommended Mount Desert Ice Cream in Bar Harbor. We checked it out but were really underwhelmed. It was fine but nothing special and didn’t seem deserving of the hype.

Our favorite of the trip was Mount Desert Ice Cream, which I’d also tried in Portland but which was born right here in Bar Harbor, and which had many vegan flavors for Liz to enjoy.
