412 N Fairfax Avenue Yes, Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo make a mean spicy fusilli, but the pies are a must at this dynamic duo’s busy pizzerias. Pizzas are playfully named -- like Ham & Yeezy (a glorious vessel of salty meat and vodka sauce), White Lightning (a tomato-less pie filled with an enticing blend of white cheeses, garlic, and pickled jalapenos), and LA Woman (a favorite filled with creamy burrata and laced with olive oil) -- though the art of making them is downright serious. Dough is rested for 48 hours before it’s popped into a gas-powered stone hearth oven, which creates a crisp, heavily charred crust with fluffy edges.

Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo build on their Fairfax legacy that started with Animal by opening this popular restaurant with skylights, an open kitchen, an overflowing pastry case and Helen’s wine shop in back. During lunch and dinner, Italian-American cuisine dominates the kitchen, but for breakfast the buttermilk pancakes ($13.25) are a coveted item. Crisped on a griddle with vegetable oil and topped with seasonal berries (blueberries, strawberries and, if you're lucky, limited edition ollalieberries), the stack is blanketed with airy salted butter and saturating maple syrup.

We don’t need to remind anyone about the existence of Jon & Vinny’s, but one aspect of this Italian spot on Fairfax that we’ll continue to point out is that it’s open all day. And while we’re big proponents of their breakfast situation (the BLT is a must), come lunchtime, it’s the same menu as it is at night. The only difference is you don’t have to make a reservation a month in advance to experience it.

The vibe is urban and intimate in this hole-in-the-wall space, which is almost always packed to the gills. There'll undoubtedly be hip hop playing in the background, and chefs chugging from deli cups on the open line that flanks the bar seating. Chances are there'll be a wait for your table, which is just as well, since you can enjoy a glass of wine from Helen's wine shop at the back.

To feel hip and cool, and to maybe see a celebrity (or three), go to Jon & Vinny’s. Packed nightly with pizza enthusiasts looking to chow down on an array of savory Italian dishes, the place is buzzing with life. If the place is too busy for your liking, both take out and delivery are also available.

If you’ve been at least twice to one of Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo’s eponymous restaurants — which are at once meta-commentaries on red-sauce joints and actual feel-good neighborhood restaurants — you can probably name your go-to dishes. I have mine: the herb-flecked mozzarella sticks, which stretch rather than ooze; the chicken Parm, a model of balance; and whatever salad is showing off the season (perhaps white peach, burrata, tomatoes and basil, all covered with a handful of arugula). I’ll never say no to the famous L.A.

Jon & Vinny’s is Italian-inspired with a hipster flair, but their Fusilli with spicy Vodka is one of the best pastas I’ve ever had. Every time I go, I need to pair this pasta with their marinara braised meatballs, which come with a blob of ricotta cheese and two loaves of perfectly grilled garlic bread. I’ve been to Jon and Vinny’s several times and I have ordered different pastas to explore the menu, but one way or another, I always keep coming back to the spicy vodka.

Pizza fans don't have to wait until lunch to get their fix at Jon & Vinny's, the Italian American eatery opened in April 2015 by chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo. Sequels have since opened in Brentwood, Slauson and Beverly Hills. The original Fairfax location is an intimate, 45-seat space with a spare interior that's fronted by glass, with an open kitchen, floor-to-ceiling blonde wood, and a boutique wine shop, Helen’s, tucked in the back.

Just down the street from the original Animal, is the immensely popular all-day hub, Jon and Vinny’s.
