Of course, if you can get a dinner reservation, do so, and you’ll instantly appreciate Nepenthe’s role as a pioneer in the farm-to-table food movement, served up in every locally sourced bite.

For dinner, reserve well in advance at Nepenthe, another Big Sur institution. The restaurant, which opened in 1949, offers stellar views of the sea and dazzling sunsets thanks to its position in the Santa Lucia Mountains. At both of these places, though, the view is best from the outdoor bar areas (OK for kids) so you need only pay for overpriced drinks rather than overpriced full meals to enjoy them.

We are foodies, but would rather pack a lunch than simply pay for a view and have an expensive lunch with sub par food." That's Nepenthe in my humble opinion. Try lunch at the Post Ranch Inn, should please your foodie palate.

Later, they sold it to the Fassett family, who opened a sun-splashed restaurant, Nepenthe, with excellent views (Highway 1, Big Sur; 831-667-2345; www.nepenthebigsur.com; lunch for two $40).

Copeland recounted that Orson Welles, from whom the Fassetts acquired the property in 1947, had purchased the original cabin, for his wife, Rita Hayworth, as a haven from Hollywood. Despite the seemingly endless views of the dramatic coastline in both directions, Hayworth purportedly declared: “Orson, this is so cute, but I will never spend the night here.” Whether she did or not, Copeland wasn’t sure, but he did know that a few years later the Fassetts bought the property from Welles and began the transformation into what Nepenthe is now, a Bohemian cliffside restaurant where both locals and tourists flock. Nepenthe, in Greek, means “that which chases away sorrow.” And it is aptly named.

Its incredible location and wrap-around views from its deck all add up to a spendier experience, but the $14 Soup ‘n Salad combo is still a good deal given the portion size and unbelievable tastiness of that garbanzo and kidney bean salad. If you’re coming for dinner, try to time your arrival in order to be seated in time for sundown, so you can watch the sun set over the ocean.

A must-go place to eat in this area is the Nepenthe Restaurant. Everybody who has been through Big Sur has also been here. It is one of the best attractions in Big Sur that everybody loves: an amazing ocean viewpoint with great food and drinks.

Unlike many places in Big Sur, it’s hard to drive by Nepenthe without noticing it. You’ll see the large parking lot and multi-story building as you approach. Normally we avoid crowded spots like this, but the views from Nepenthe are worth it.

While the parents partied (hey, it was the ’80s), we kids would run wild around the Nepenthe grounds. We would play in the sand at Pfeiffer Beach and then lounge in the river that runs along the Big Sur Lodge. I remember feeling so free.

The terrace area can be seen in the 1965 movie The Sandpiper with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. I’m going to be honest here, the food here, as I guess most places in Big Sur, was basic and overpriced but the view man, that view!

Sitting 600 feet above the ocean, the views are outstanding. Enjoy a relaxing glass of wine on the patio, or a delightful meal as you gaze out to the Pacific Ocean. The gift shop and cafe are open for something quick and easy as well.

I had heard of the amazing views from Nepenthe Big Sur and needed to come check it out for myself. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed. Try and snag yourself a table at the outer-edge on the outside patio for maximum ocean views.

After that, I stopped at Nepenthe Restaurant_ for some drinks and snacks just to get a good view of the peninsula. It’s definitely a recommendation for people to get their lunch or dinner. Everyone likes food with a good view!.

This place is very touristy, but it’s an iconic part of Big Sur. We had lunch here in the summer of 2009. I can’t remember anything too special about the food, but the views were incredible!
