Chris Dupont was way ahead of the curve when he moved his Southern-inspired fine-dining restaurant Cafe Dupont from Springville, where it began in 1994, to downtown Birmingham 13 years ago. Downtown has since come back to life after dark -- with bistros, cafés, bars and burger joints -- but for the longest time, Dupont kept the flame burning almost all by himself. Dupont earned his culinary stripes working with chefs Emeril Lagasse and Susan Spicer in his hometown of New Orleans, and the Café Dupont menu reflects that influence, with signature dishes such as fried oysters and okra, grilled quail and braised rabbit, as well as house-made beignets for dessert.

Chef-owner Chris Dupont opened his first restaurant in Springville back in the mid-90s, and it was so well received he opened another location in downtown Birmingham in 2003. He had the space renovated, but certain elements – the weathered brick walls, original hardwood floors and high ceilings – remained in order to preserve the building's integrity and century-old charm. As to the fare, Dupont is dedicated to using ingredients grown locally, so his featured mains may include the likes of grilled Georgia quail with andouille sausage, Painted Hills flat iron steak with Yorkshire pudding, or Duroc pork chop with sweet potato soufflé and tempura-fried apple.

Kev and I escaped the world for romantic lunches and dinners at its original Springville location. It was just far enough away to enjoy both the ride and the restaurant. As newlyweds we could not get enough of each other and this place.
