Reviews Summary

Osteria Rago is praised for its authentic Italian grandmother-style cooking, homemade pasta, and cozy ambiance, often described as a hidden gem. While many rave about dishes like the carbonara, chicken parmesan, and bruschetta, some diners find the restaurant to be overrated and overpriced, citing issues with seasoning, consistency, and small portion sizes for the cost. The wine prices are also a point of contention for some.

"Best Italian restaurant in Bloomington! We have eaten here many times and have NEVER been disappointed or had anything less than a perfect meal. Everything is excellent. Cacio e pepe, lasagna, chicken Parmesan, chopped salad, caprese salad, focaccia, cannoli. All of it. Amazing.

At this meal it was the seasonal risotto which was spicy shrimp. Wow, the layers of flavor went on and on with the perfect amount of heat, and perfectly cooked shrimp. Our server Lauren, who we have had before is always professional and very helpful.

The mint chocolate chip cannoli was light in the perfect shell.

We will always come back to Osteria Rago. If you’re looking for the quintessential college bar, try their sister restaurant next door at Nick’s for some Hoosier nostalgia.

This is an independent, uncompensated review."

"1.5 Shockingly overrated and overpriced food. A customer shouldn’t have doubts when eating at a $40+ per person restaurant whether the food was prepared correctly. Meatball app ($17) was under seasoned and tender but dry, likely not made to order. Topped with ridiculous amounts of bland rubber cheese - why not something freshly grated? Focaccia with the app was way too doughy. (I feel like anyone plating that would have noticed how gray and squishy the bread was and would replace or pop it back in. The bread with the entree was fine.) Seasonal risotto ($21) was, as the picture shows, just rice in broth with addons on top, far from the consistency of a genuine risotto. Pesto pasta ($19) was inedible after a few bites. We genuinely thought the vegetable was kale, that’s how oil-soaked and bitter the arugula was. Gummy, sticky consistency like wet concrete that picks the whole plate up when you go for just a forkful.

I get we could have just gotten an “off night” (Saturday at 7pm?) but at that price point and after this experience it would take a lot to return and try other dishes."

"Tucked-away gem with amazing food and a cozy vibe.

We had the carbonara, shrimp fettuccine, meatballs, and espresso drinks — everything was delicious and felt authentically Italian. The space is charming with live plants and warm colors. Service was great overall, though the hostess seemed a bit put off when we didn’t have a reservation (not a noted requirement on Google).

Still, we’d definitely return — just call ahead next time"
