Of what I consider the “boujee” donut shops (Kane’s, Union Square, and Blackbird), Kane’s Donuts takes the cake. Their downtown location lets you enjoy your donut inside their nice shop, outside on the patio amidst the high rises, or on the nearby Greenway. Their donuts are more expensive than the previous shops on the list for not as good of quality (but still great), but they offer a great selection of regular and gluten free donuts.

It’s a heck of a lot easier to roll out of bed in the morning knowing that there’s a doughnut waiting for you once you swat the alarm. Kane’s Donuts, with a Downtown Boston spot as well as two Saugus locations, perks things up with especially robust gluten-free offerings: doughnuts made in a different facility with completely different utensils and oil as the other items on the menu. As beloved as ever, you’ll have to choose among 30-plus varieties. Upon visiting the Kane’s Donuts website, my expectations were set extremely high because of how cool the shop looked and how perfect the donuts appeared. I regret to inform, especially to the loyal Kane’s customers, that their donuts just didn’t do it justice for me. I tried four flavors, strawberry frosted with sprinkles, coconut with a raspberry jelly filling, “Honey Dip,” and a Boston cream donut.

The droolworthy donuts are made fresh with local ingredients; for a real treat order the Creme Brulee. It’s filled with vanilla-bean custard, then dipped in a glaze of honey and caramelized by hand with a torch.

My kids love donuts and when my husband and I decided our home needed to be gluten free, my kids were most upset about not having donuts in our house. So finding Kane’s gluten free donuts felt like winning the lottery. KGF donuts are gluten, dairy and nut free and they come in a dozen different flavors.
