Liebman’s Deli is one of the best places in The Bronx to enjoy authentic kosher delicacies. It is filled with treats such that once you walk in, the first thing that greets you is the sweet aroma of pastrami, pickles, and corned beef sandwich that features a generous amount of sliced meat. The queue in Liebman’s Deli can get considerably long sometimes, but this should not worry you because by the time you get to the counter, the food, especially the pastrami, will be well-steamed and still hot.

With David Sax as our guide (see his book, Save the Deli), we first travel to the Bronx for “hush puppies”–little hot dogs wrapped in potato–at Liebman’s, which carries a full New York deli menu, and continues a generation-old tradition. It’s a neighborhood place, worth the easy trip from Manhattan. Then, not so far from Yankee Stadium, there’s Loeser’s, a comfy old fashioned place that David describes in his blog.

Liebman’s Delicatessen is famously the last Jewish deli in the Bronx and, as such, its No. 7 sandwich — thinly sliced layers of pastrami and corned beef, topped with coleslaw and Russian dressing — earned a spot on the Times’ list. “In some cases, being the last one standing doesn’t mean you were the best,” Israel-born owner Yuval Dekel told our colleagues at The Nosher. “But I happen to think that we deserve it.

It’s the rough and tough Jewish waiter who's got some schtick that he might say,” he said. It’s also the deli counter with the glass case and hanging cured meats, the simple tables that are tightly packed in, the framed black-and-white photos of previous owners, regulars, and celebrities, and the often never-changing menu. “We're stubborn and we serve the same food we've always been doing,” Dekel continued.

Like many Jewish delis in NYC, Liebman’s is totally kosher and totally delicious. Like the brisket sandwich topped with Russian dressing pictured above, this deli has been serving up soups, sandwiches, salads, knishes, smoked fish and meats since 1953. Because they’re in the Bronx and not Manhattan or Brooklyn, they don’t get the same hours-long touristy lines that visit the likes of Katz’s and Frankel’s.
