Reviews Summary

Liebman's Deli is celebrated for its authentic Jewish deli experience, particularly its generous and delicious pastrami sandwiches and hearty matzo ball soup. Diners appreciate the old-school atmosphere and friendly service, though some note that prices can be high and the pastrami occasionally fatty. Overall, it's considered a worthwhile destination for classic deli fare.

"We always order their Pastrami Reuben sandwich, which comes with coleslaw. Everything was fresh whenever we stopped by. Around lunchtime, it gets crowded, but the quality of food and service outweighs the wait time. The portions are big, and we always split the dish between the two of us."

"Old school and authentic Jewish deli. The waiters here are all in their 60s. The pastrami was a bit fatty. The matzo ball soup was perfectly good. The pickles are good. They were out of chicken liver. 😤. The can of coke was overpriced. The cabbage roll was very sweet and was not made with rice"

"A gem found in the Bronx! I believe the pastrami (got the overstuffed on a Kaiser) is in my top three of the NYC boroughs! The matzah ball soup with noodles and bits of fresh chicken is to die for! Flavorful and lasting taste soup. The pastrami taste and texture is what I call A1 triple stars. Exactly how I've always liked my pastrami! The knish was okay it was good on the inside but tough on the outside. I also wished it was warmer and perhaps, fresher. Almost forgot, coleslaw and pickles were awesome too! This was on a Sunday and it got a bit crowded but not too bad about 12:15pm. Before then it was quite quiet and chill. Service is OUTSTANDING!"

With David Sax as our guide (see his book, Save the Deli), we first travel to the Bronx for “hush puppies”–little hot dogs wrapped in potato–at Liebman’s, which carries a full New York deli menu, and continues a generation-old tradition. It’s a neighborhood place, worth the easy trip from Manhattan. Then, not so far from Yankee Stadium, there’s Loeser’s, a comfy old fashioned place that David describes in his blog.

These Jewish sandwiches define NYC, according to the New York Times

Liebman’s Delicatessen is famously the last Jewish deli in the Bronx and, as such, its No. 7 sandwich — thinly sliced layers of pastrami and corned beef, topped with coleslaw and Russian dressing — earned a spot on the Times’ list. “In some cases, being the last one standing doesn’t mean you were the best,” Israel-born owner Yuval Dekel told our colleagues at The Nosher. “But I happen to think that we deserve it.

The Jewish Deli Is An NYC Icon. Here’s How It’s Changed

It’s the rough and tough Jewish waiter who's got some schtick that he might say,” he said. It’s also the deli counter with the glass case and hanging cured meats, the simple tables that are tightly packed in, the framed black-and-white photos of previous owners, regulars, and celebrities, and the often never-changing menu. “We're stubborn and we serve the same food we've always been doing,” Dekel continued.

The 15 Best New York Delis, as of Summer 2022

Like many Jewish delis in NYC, Liebman’s is totally kosher and totally delicious. Like the brisket sandwich topped with Russian dressing pictured above, this deli has been serving up soups, sandwiches, salads, knishes, smoked fish and meats since 1953. Because they’re in the Bronx and not Manhattan or Brooklyn, they don’t get the same hours-long touristy lines that visit the likes of Katz’s and Frankel’s.
