Reviews Summary

Farmhouse Tap & Grill is celebrated for its farm-to-table ethos and impressive craft beer selection. Diners often rave about the gourmet burgers and the lively atmosphere, especially the speakeasy lounge. However, some visitors have experienced long wait times and inconsistent food quality, with occasional complaints about portion sizes relative to price.

"My family and I found this place online while vacationing in Vermont. The service and atmosphere were extremely welcoming. We all enjoyed our meals. However, I need to call out the mussels, which I paired with their delicious fries (see pic). The mussels were perfectly cooked, plump, and juicy. The buttery broth included mini golden russet potatoes and cherry tomatoes. The local draft brew I tried was also excellent. I will return next time I am in Burlington."

David Jochelson

"We were at Farmhouse for a Saturday dinner. The restaurant was super crowded, there was a 40 minutes wait time. But then the host told us they had a speakeasy bar in the basement. That worked out well for as we found an empty booth. There were bunch of board games, dirts and lots of sitting space.

The menu was same the one in the restaurant. We ordered couple of drinks alongside bunch of dishes. Tuesday drinks were good. Mussels were okay, I felt there was some unpleasant smell to it. But the farm beef burger, salmon and mac n cheese were very good. We enjoyed those a lot.

The bartender and rest of the staff were very friendly. The food did take little extra time to come out. But overall we had a nice dinner experience."

Nehal Ahmed

"The drinks and the atmosphere were both excellent; it is Vermont, after all. I always find the atmosphere delightful when visiting Vermont. I enjoyed the fries; they were warm, fresh, and crispy. My burger was cooked perfectly, although the caramelized onions were actually pickled onions, and the cheddar cheese lacked sharpness. My husband's burger was good, and he enjoyed it. He tasted my burger and agreed that it didn't quite meet my expectations."

The best restaurants in Burlington, VT

Foodies in Burlington should perhaps direct the most gratitude to Farmhouse, which helped kickstart the entire foodie movement when it replaced the McDonald’s that had long served downtown in 2010. Two dollar Big Macs and Quarter Pounders transformed to $16 LaPlatte River Angus Farm beef, Misty Knoll free range turkey, and Vermont Heritage Grazers pork burgers, alongside other gussied-up comfort food favorites like mac and cheese, fish and chips, and fried chicken. Vegans and vegetarians also find equal opportunity in dishes like spiced roots and quinoa, kale salad, and black bean burgers.

12 Must-Visit Restaurants in Burlington, Vermont

At this Burlington gastropub, the extensive list of draught and bottled beers is as noteworthy as the food menu showcasing the bounty of Vermont’s many small farms. The meat for the lamb burger, for instance, comes from nearby Tamarack Farm; the pork for the schnitzel, meanwhile, is procured from Vermont Heritage Grazers, which raises top-quality Berkshire hogs. (Don’t worry, vegetarians, you’re covered with great grub, too.) Dig in from a seat at the gorgeously carved wood bar, or while hanging out in a heated outdoor beer garden that feels like a friend’s back patio.

At The Farmhouse Tap & Grill, a downtown gastropub, the menu proudly “showcases the bounty of Vermont’s many small farms,” such as local lamb in their burgers and heritage pork in the schnitzel (12 Must-Visit Restaurants in Burlington, Vermont). Classic New England comfort foods get a Vermont twist here, and even the raw bar is stocked with regional oysters for that maritime touch in this lakeside city. Diners can expect hearty comfort food classics – chowders, mac & cheese, maple-glazed meats – all elevated by ultra-fresh ingredients and chef-driven care.

Feast: The Farmhouse, Burlington VT

The local food movement has been growing in popularity over the last few years, but restaurants that place a serious emphasis on local ingredients are still relatively few in number. Truthfully, this can be understandable in many areas of the country, where farming may not be a big part of industry, and local food production may be scarce. But in Vermont, where places like Misty Knoll Poultry and Jasper Hill Farms are right down the road, there is no excuse for local food to be far from your plate at any meal.

Naturally, the community suggested they call themselves "The Old McDonald's Farmhouse." Now with a slightly abbreviated name, The Farmhouse serves comfort food, specializing in burgers made with local meat, but the less-homey starters steal the show. Try the beef tartare with housemade potato chips or a carefully-curated local cheese plate. A cocktail menu and an amazing array of craft beers keep the bartenders busy.
