Reviews Summary

Angus Barn is a long-standing Raleigh institution celebrated for its upscale steakhouse experience, festive atmosphere, and exceptional service. While many praise the quality of the steaks, salads, and desserts, and the unique, historic ambiance, some find the prices high for the perceived quality, noting occasional inconsistencies in food preparation.

"We had an amazing Mothers Day lunch. We were seated in the Turkey Lounge in under 20 min. Lovely lighting, decorated, and warm atmosphere. The drinks and food were so delicious. Our waiter was kind , helpful and prompt with everything. After we ate , we went by the little store inside and walked around to look at all the historical artifacts. Steak, Steak, Steak! We all had a delicious steak and starter. So delicious!"

Cecilia L

"I've heard about this place from TV and word of mouth. I tried to make a dinner reservation online but the website seemed to block typical dinner hours or their reservation was completely filled up far in advance. In any case, I've decided to try the lounge which opens at 3 and it's first come first serve.

This place had great atmosphere. The decoration was unique. Totally southern barnyard feel. We ordered tomahawk ($95) and beef ribs ($40). In many reviews, people complained about their overprices, but considering the crazy inflation of beef prices these days, I thought their price was not unreasonable.

However, the taste and quality of steaks were not as good as it looked. The meat was rather tough and bit dry. Unfortunately I cannot give more than 3 stars for that reason. It was a shame. I had a high expectation."

Robert

"Angus barn is a staple in Raleigh dining, celebrating their 65th year for a reason. The atmosphere is extremely themed - old southern barn vibes. That's not really my thing as much but I know some folks enjoy the theme more than me. The food and service are so good that the theme doesn't throw me. Ben took great care of my mom and I for her birthday dinner. Our food was delicious, the steaks were well seasoned and cooked to our preference. The wedge salad is a highlight for me every time. Their homemade desserts also didn't disappoint! For special occasions and celebrations, the Angus Barn is a tradition."

Dinner at this huge, rustic barn (a Raleigh legend) is a real event and certainly worth the sizable prices. With its big portions, kitschy surroundings, and 89-page wine and beer list, this steak house is both traditional and fun. Under the supervision of Iron Chef Walter Royal, the steaks, prime rib, fresh seafood, baby back ribs, and homemade desserts are all delicious.

Oldest Restaurants in Raleigh | Iconic Dining Spots

A family-owned institution for more than 60 years, the double doors of the now-fabled Angus Barn swung wide in June of 1960—a 275-seat steak-and-potatoes based restaurant dreamt up by owner Thad Eure, Jr. that aimed to provide families and travelers to the Raleigh area with impeccable service. Today, more than 20,000 nights, 13 million customers served, one complete rebuild (the restaurant burned to the ground just four years after opening and was promptly rebuilt twice as big) and a half-dozen expansions later, the 650-seat Angus Barn remains one of the most sought-after destination dining spots in the Southeast. Known for an impressive wine list, gracious hospitality and a cozy, rustic ambiance, Angus Barn still serves more than 22,000 steaks per month, but the menu has evolved to include seafood, poultry and pasta (not to mention desserts—the chocolate chess pie has been written about by publications around the world).

And speaking of fowl, a Fowl Mule (made with Wild Turkey American Honey) and award-winning wine selection by certified wine sommelier and three-decade-plus Angus Barn vet Henk Schuitemaker are an easy draw—best sipped in the Wild Turkey Lounge or behind the barn by a fire pit, perhaps pulling on one of the cigar selects. And while that bacon-wrapped pan-seared buttery filet ordered Oscar-style (crabmeat, asparagus, hollandaise sauce) is the stuff of our dreams, the housemade cheese and crackers keep bringing us back—even to the in-house market to stock up at home. Book a rez in the meat locker for an unmatched dining experience—and be sure to visit the famous well-stocked luxe lavatories.

2019 Food & Drink Almanac: The 10 Best Wine Bars in the Triangle

As renowned as Angus Barn’s steaks are, its Wine Cellar—two ridiculously opulent dining rooms with a private staff and kitchen surrounded by one of the best wine collections in the country—might be the pinnacle of fine dining in the Triangle. If you’d rather dial back the extravagance and remain in Angus Barn’s main dining room, however, you’ll still have access to the full wine bottle list—an eighty-nine-page document. (There’s a separate by-the-glass menu, a comparatively slim six pages.) There’s a reason Angus Barn has won the ultra-prestigious Grand Award from Wine Spectator, an honor only bestowed on ninety-one restaurants in the world, thirty years in a row.

These are the 10 must-eat restaurants in Raleigh, NC

There’s no telling how many people have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and promotions at this perennially popular steakhouse. Six decades after its opening in 1960, folks still make the trek out to the big red barn on the outskirts of Raleigh for its unlikely combination of down-on-the-farm atmosphere, world-class wine cellar, and aged beef (including the Chateaubriand that was the favorite of the steakhouse’s late co-founder, Thad Eure Jr.), served by a friendly wait staff dedicated to making you feel pampered. For proof: In February, the restaurant was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Hospitality, a national award, for the first time.
