What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Maize Mexican Grill receives praise for its authentic flavors, handmade tortillas, and generous portions, creating a welcoming atmosphere in a unique train station setting. However, some diners have experienced issues with service inconsistency and value for money, particularly concerning automatic gratuities and portion sizes for certain items.
"The tacos really hold up. The tortillas taste great, thinly sliced ribeye with the melted cheese was great too.
The free tortilla chips were thick but the salsa and all the dips are pretty addicting."

"We were a family of 4, new to the area looking for something to eat. We decided to give this place a try and we were not disappointed. We usually get 3 entrees for 4 people, so we were very surprised to see how much food we ordered when it arrived.
They only do one free round of chips and salsa, but honestly you don’t even need to fill up on chips because HALF an entree will fill you up.
We added zucchini blossoms to the fajitas and enchilada, which added an interesting and unique flavor to it.
Whether you’re a student of nearby University of Illinois or just visiting, I’d highly recommend this place!"

"Second time here. Wanted to try the Mega Tlacoyo. Didn’t like it that much. The flavor was muddled. The meat was the strongest flavor and we didn’t like it. However, the smoked mezcal drink was fantastic! The chips and salsa and order of guacamole was excellent! The chicken and shrimp enchiladas were tasty too. Our server was kind! We will visit again when we are in town."

The Best Restaurants In Champaign, Illinois
The owners of Maize Mexican Grill are from Mexico City, so you know that what you’re getting is authentic. The menu is short but sweet. Most of the dishes are recognizable to Mexican food connoisseurs (with a few exceptions, of course, like the torta ahogada and the tlacoyo, which both include a number of traditional Mexican ingredients put together in different ways).

A-MAIZE-ING: With breakfast, lunch and dinner options, Maize is a great option for any meal due to its fresh, unique flavors, generous portions, and friendly environment. For dinner, guests are invited to have two courses — Sopa Tarasca (bean and tortilla soup) with a choice of entrees. For the vegetarians, we were excited to see Mega Tlacoyo with Nopales featured — a stuffed blue corn tortilla topped with tender grilled nopales, melted cheese, onion, cilantro, sour cream, and añjeo cheese.
BEST new restaurants of the decade: 2010-2019
When Maize Mexican Grill took over the little shack on First and Green in 2011, it was without much fanfare or anticipation. The restaurant, which previously housed Ye Olde Donuts, Noe’s BBQ, and Derald’s over the previous decade, opened quietly, with just a small vinyl banner out front that had a drawing of a couple of Mexican farmers tilling land. I reviewed it on a whim, two weeks after it opened, stumbling into it with my friend John late at night, just to see what it was all about.

The food was great with amazing flavor! However, $8 for half a paper bag of Chips & Salsa and only 2 small salsas with it and then a green sauce and another sauce seems rather steep. The Tacos de Lomo (3) were filling and so tasty! And a classic Diet coke was my Fountain Drink.". "Pasta Poblana and Chips & Salsa were edible but not the best . their tacos are so boring and lacking much flavor. Meat was very dry with very minimal seasoning.
