Merritt’s Grill: You’ve never had a BLT until you’ve had one from Merritt’s. Available in single, double, and triple depending on how full you want the sandwich, you can add everything from avocado to pimento cheese to cajun chicken, on a choice of 7 different types of bread. If BLTs aren’t your thing, they do also serve breakfast specials, burgers, and hot dogs, but frankly I’m not a BLT person and still think these are incredible.

What opened as a gas station with a small grill on the side has become a local favorite with lines out the door for its legendary BLT sandwich. Merritt’s Grill offers delicious breakfast and lunchtime sandwich fare with two outdoor seating options. You can choose to sit at umbrella-covered tables in the front or a shady, bamboo-adorned picnic area in the back.

After you’ve worked up an appetite walking around campus, check out the perfect nearby lunch spot. The BLT is a classic for its simplicity, but at Merritt’s Grill, the classic has become legendary. Served on toasted sourdough bread, the sandwich is piled high with juicy tomatoes, crisp lettuce, a dollop of mayonnaise and, of course, thick-cut slices of bacon.

Merritt’s Store and Grill has a great selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches--students say the BLT is a must!. On Franklin Street head to Al's Burger, a popular favorite serving what Garden and Gun Magazine calls some of the best burgers in the south. We loved Mediterranean Deli, a large casual all-day restaurant, take away and gourmet market all in one.

Back in Chapel Hill, we couldn’t resist the legendary BLT at Merritt’s Grill, and apparently, neither could the rest of the Triangle. We lucked out, arriving just two minutes before the line wrapped around the parking lot. Don’t stress though—this well-oiled BLT machine keeps things moving fast!

I like when a restaurant or business does one thing so well, they can operate their business with just that one thing if they wanted to!. Such is the case with Merritt’s Grill and their BLT. They have other things on their menu, but really, just get the BLT.

In operation since 1992, this eatery with outdoor seating is one of the best breakfast places in Chapel Hill, serving exquisite sandwiches, and sausage and egg plates in a casual space.
