Look, most of the time I’d classify Babas on Cannon (and its sibling, Babas on Meeting), as an all-day café. That is, until 4 o’clock on a Friday or Saturday, when these spots transform into a Southern European-style bar. The counter is cleared to make way for a feast of delicious snacks (or snackies, per our household), all ready to graze with the purchase of a cocktail or glass of wine.

We headed to lunch at Babas, a terrific all-day spot that has two locations and that we go to many times during each stay. We swing by for quiche and peanut lattes at breakfast, orange spritzes for aperitivo hour, and pickled shrimp salad for lunch. With gem lettuce, local pickled shrimp, avocado, parsley, and shallots, it’s light but filling, and perfect for a spring lunch al fresco.

An enchanting private garden at 58 Church St that opens to the public on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for a donation of $10 through a front door mail slot (to help with garden upkeep). It’s a calm oasis, that Mrs. Emily Whaley (1911-1998) commissioned Landscape Architect Loutrel W. Briggs (1893-1977) to design behind their 1754 Charleston Single House.

Babas on Cannon: A really cute space off of King Street, with some outdoor tables. I got their peanut mocha (I love peanut butter, especially with chocolate, so I couldn’t resist), and would have loved to come back for breakfast or even snacks and cocktails later in the day.

Femi: Babas on Cannon routinely makes my life difficult (in a good way!) — the pastries are always supremely tasty. I like to grab a few things from there to toss in my bag and cruise my bike over to White Point Garden by the Battery for a quick bite by the water.
